As I fill out my mail-in ballot, it is an absolute pleasure to see that 's asinine proposal to split California into 3 states has been removed by order of the California Supreme Court. Thank you, Cali Supremes!

Tim Draper is disappointed in the California Supreme Court for stripping Proposition 9, his “Three Californias” initiative, from the November ballot. In some ways, we share his disappointment. The court’s decision doesn’t represent “corruption,” as Draper asserts. But it does mean Califo...

"If Draper’s Cal 3 measure passes muster, it will go on the 2020 ballot, but chances are it will fail the constitutional test and be permanently junked — and that’s what should happen."

The reaction continues to the demise of Cal 3. "This self-serving proposition backed by a billionaire is a cynical example of using the initiative process to better one’s economic advantage. Using the political system to enhance personal fortune is a tactic reserved for oligarchs in Third World nations."

In a real democracy, we would not allow corporations, billionaires like Tim Draper and special interests to put self-serving initiatives on the ballot.

The Sacramento Bee editorial board joins the LA Times, San Jose Mercury News and others urging the Supreme Court of California to throw this off the ballot. We hope the court agrees to hear the case on Wednesday.

Billionaire Tim Draper’s plan to split California into three states has little chance of becoming reality, but will cause years of confusion and upheaval. The state Supreme Court should kick it off the Nov. 6, 2018, ballot.
