A brace and bolt retrofit strengthens an existing house, making it more resistant to earthquake activity such as ground shaking and soil failure, by bolting the house to its foundation and adding bracing around the perimeter of the crawl space. A San Francisco homeowner residing in a home built in 1926 didn't wait for the "right time" to retrofit. Through the Earthquake Soft-Story (ESS) grant program, they worked with a structural engineer and contractor to install a freestanding shear wall, strengthening their garage without losing the space. The project took patience, but the result is a home built to hold up when earthquake shaking occurs.

Registration for the Earthquake Multi-Unit Retrofit (EMR) grant program is currently open through September 30. Eligible owners of 5-10 unit soft-story buildings can get up to $49,600 to help with the cost of a required seismic retrofit in participating cities.

California general contractors with a Type A or B license can participate in CRMP's retrofit programs. Already registered for one program? Just complete the remaining free training in your Dashboard and you're in.

Once trained, you're added to the CRMP Contractor Directory, where homeowners see your name and can select their retrofit contractor.
