A San Francisco homeowner residing in a home built in 1926 didn't wait for the "right time" to retrofit. Through the Earthquake Soft-Story (ESS) grant program, they worked with a structural engineer and contractor to install a freestanding shear wall, strengthening their garage without losing the space. The project took patience, but the result is a home built to hold up when earthquake shaking occurs.
