Center for Inclusive Democracy

Center for Inclusive Democracy The Center for Inclusive Democracy's mission is to improve the social and economic quality of life in U.S.

communities by producing non-partisan, data-driven research that informs policy and on-the-ground organizing efforts through education and outreach. The CCEP was established at the UC Davis Center for Regional Change to engage public dialogue on representative governance. CCEP research is intended to inform and empower a wide range of policy and organizing efforts, supporting equity and wellbeing

throughout California and the nation. The CCEP’s work supports inclusive civic engagement as a critical factor in overcoming disparities in social and economic wellbeing, including outcomes in education, health and employment. CCEP research also helps explore non-traditional measures of civic engagement, particularly among groups historically underrepresented in our civic and political institutions. The CCEP has become a go-to source for electoral and civic engagement research, including the examination of nationally relevant election reforms such as automatic voter registration, online voter registration and vote centers. Legislators, public agencies, advocates, researchers, media (state and national) and community leaders use its pioneering research to track disparities and opportunities in civic participation by place and population. The CCEP partners with non-partisan civic engagement groups to increase political participation among young voters and other underrepresented groups. The CCEP utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to carry out spatial analysis, highlighting hotspots of civic engagement by place and population. The CCEP also produces a policy brief series highlighting the role played by underrepresented groups, such as California’s Latino, Asian and youth electorate. The CCEP welcomes inquiries and partnerships on issues regarding civic participation in California and beyond. Access our CCEP Publications, learn about the CCEP’s national advisory committee, or review the extensive coverage of the CCEP’s work in the California and national media on our website. How sick is our democracy today? “Unfortunately, it’s pretty sick by multiple measures,” says USC Price Assistant Professor and Center for Inclusive Democracy director Mindy Romero.

Romero is co-leading By the People, For the People, a national initiative to rebuild trust in democracy.

At the heart of the plan is a People’s Assembly in Washington, D.C., where citizen delegates will create a roadmap of reforms to strengthen participation and representation.
