In-demand behavioral health careers start with strong workforce pathways.đź’š

The California Labor and Workforce Development Agency’s latest blog highlights California’s efforts to strengthen behavioral health career pathways and expand access to care across rural communities.

As healthcare continues to drive resilience and economic growth, CWDB is partnering with regional leaders to expand local training capacity, strengthen career pathways, and align workforce programs with employer needs.

Through apprenticeships, earn-and-learn models, and community-based training, Californians can gain in-demand behavioral health skills while earning an income and building careers that support community well-being.

California is projected to have a 40% shortage of mental health workers this year.

Our partner, Multi-Ethnic Collaborative of Community Agencies, has teamed up with nine agencies across Orange County to expand training and career pathways in behavioral health. Their Planning and Development for Expanded Multi-Ethnic Behavioral Health Workforce project is opening doors for individuals to gain the skills they need for meaningful, well-paying careers—while helping communities access critical services.

The program focuses on four in-demand roles:
• Community Health Workers
• Certified Wellness Coaches
• Peer Support Specialists
• Substance Use Disorder Counselors

Thank you to MECCA and all of their partners for investing in people, communities, and a healthier California!

During Mental Health Month, we’re recognizing the Worker Education and Resource Center as it wraps up its High Road Training Partnership grant in Los Angeles and Alameda counties.

THIS IS REAL IMPACT.

Training community health workers. Expanding harm reduction specialist pathways. Meeting people where they are.

These workers are on the front lines in our most vulnerable communities – reducing harm, connecting people to care, and strengthening public health and safety every day.

They are also helping fill California’s behavioral health workforce shortage. And they are doing it by opening doors for people with barriers to employment to step into stable, meaningful careers.

This is what building a stronger California looks like.

California has a shortage of behavioral health providers, with rural communities experiencing some of the greatest need.

During Mental Health Month, CWDB is highlighting how workforce investments are helping close this across California: expanding opportunities, connecting Californians to stable, family-sustaining careers, and helping communities meet the growing demand for behavioral health services.

From paid training opportunities to partnerships with community-based organizations, educators, labor, and employers, these efforts are helping build a stronger, more diverse, and culturally responsive behavioral health workforce.

Strong partnerships mean stronger workforce development opportunities—and a stronger future for mental health care in California.
