The ability to speak someone's language can turn a simple interaction into a meaningful connection. 💛

Volunteer Homaira recently shared how rewarding it has been to help at River City Food Bank's diaper distributions. Many of the families we serve are Afghan, and by helping with translation, she helps parents feel more comfortable, welcomed, and understood.

"As someone who comes from a similar background, I know how much it means to feel understood and supported," she shared. "Seeing the gratitude on parents' faces reminds me that even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference."

At River City Food Bank, volunteers who speak different languages play an important role in helping us create a welcoming environment where every guest is treated with dignity and respect.

For more than 20 years, Cynthia has been part of the River City Food Bank community. Sometimes she comes regularly, and other times she visits simply for a little extra support when life becomes more difficult. Through changing seasons of life, RCFB has remained a place she can turn to.

While Cynthia appreciates the healthy groceries, the thing that keeps her coming back is the sense of connection she’s found along the way. Over the years, she has built friendships in line and shared conversations and laughter with friends who have become part of her community.

At home, Cynthia’s generosity continues. She cooks not only for herself, but also for housemates and neighbors who are unable to get to the food bank on their own. She prepares meals, delivers plates, and makes sure others feel cared for and remembered.

Cynthia has experienced River City Food Bank as a donor, volunteer, and guest. Her story is a reminder that life can change at any moment and that having a compassionate community makes all the difference.

Speaking multiple languages can make a world of difference when serving our community. 💛

At River City Food Bank, volunteers who speak different languages help create meaningful connections with guests and ensure everyone feels welcomed, understood, and respected.

For volunteer Vivane, that connection became especially meaningful when she realized many of the guests she serves are part of Sacramento's Chinese community. As the child of immigrant parents, she understands how comforting it can be to hear your own language and connect with someone who understands your culture.

One day, a guest who rarely spoke in line overheard Chinese being spoken nearby. His face immediately lit up.

"You speak Chinese? I'm Chinese! How amazing!"

It was a simple interaction, but a powerful reminder that food is only one part of what we provide. Being seen, welcomed, and understood matters too.

Whether a volunteer speaks another language, helps distribute groceries, sorts food, greets guests, or supports behind the scenes, every role matters. Each person contributes to creating a space where neighbors are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Diapers are one of the most requested items at River City Food Bank, and our supply is currently running low.

We are especially in need of:
• Size 3–7 diapers
• Baby wipes
• Baby formula
• Baby food

For many families, these essentials can be difficult to afford while also paying for food, housing, and other necessities. Your donation helps parents and caregivers provide for their little ones with dignity and care.

River City Food Bank brought together local experts from Legal Services of Northern California, Sacramento County's Department of Human Assistance, and our own CalFresh Outreach team to help answer those questions and provide trusted information.
