California’s water system faces growing challenges.

🌊 Sea-level rise
🌎 Earthquake risk
đź’§ Changing hydrology

These factors increase the potential for water supply disruptions. The Delta Conveyance Project is designed to improve system flexibility and resilience by capturing more water during high-flow periods for use in drier times.

The Delta Conveyance Project is designed to strengthen California’s water system with modern infrastructure built for long-term reliability and resilience.

From a 45-mile underground tunnel to North Delta intakes designed to capture up to 6,000 cubic feet per second during high-flow events, each element plays a role in improving how water is conveyed while reducing surface impacts.

Bethany Reservoir is the starting point of the State Water Project’s California Aqueduct.

The Delta Conveyance Project (DCP) will include the Bethany Complex, designed to pump water from the DCP to the Bethany Reservoir Pumping Plant. From there, water will be lifted into Bethany Reservoir, where it enters the California Aqueduct for delivery across California.

More stable State Water Project deliveries help local water agencies reduce the severity and frequency of water shortages, fill reservoirs more often and enter droughts with higher reserves.

The Delta Conveyance Project is designed to strengthen SWP reliability so communities and farms can plan with more confidence, in wet years and dry ones.

California’s Water Year began October 1, 2025 and if the Delta Conveyance Project were operational, more than 348,000 acre-feet could have already been captured this year. 💧

That’s enough water to supply over 1.2 million California households for a year.
