This week marks the re-release of Dylan Scholinski’s memoir The Last Time I Wore a Dress, now with a new epilogue. Since its 1997 release, Dylan has dedicated their work to helping youth explore and embrace their identities through art. In a recent conversation with Pathways to Resilience, Dylan shared their story and thoughts on how to better support trans and gender non-conforming individuals. A new UCLA-led study on the impact of ACEs on adult health outcomes found that early-life stressors affect long-term health in ways that are both s*x- and stressor-specific. These findings highlight that individual experiences with trauma can shape adult health, offering insights that may lead to more personalized and effective health interventions. We’re eager to see where this research takes us!

PlayReadVIP is an evidence-based program that uses video feedback to support early relational health (ERH), which is one way to prevent toxic stress, buffer against ACEs, and promote capacity for resilience. In our blog spotlight, we look at what makes this program work, show evidence of its impacts, and explain how the program can advance health equity and support Medicaid programmatic goals.

This morning the New York Times highlighted that although self-reported anxiety and depression among all Americans has declined since a 2020 peak, there are rising rates of anxiety and depression among young people, likely linked in part to social conditions, economic precarity, the housing crisis, social isolation, and political turmoil. Interestingly, some research suggests that while older people show declines in attention and memory, they learn to focus more on positive memories, which might give them an advantage in response to traumatic events. Read more!

We explore why rates of anxiety and depression are higher than they were before the pandemic.

In this week's landmark advisory declaring firearm violence a public health crisis, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy noted that “high levels of exposure to firearm violence for both children and adults give rise to a cycle of trauma and fear within our communities, contributing to the nation’s mental health crisis.”

Last year, Pathways to Resilience hosted a learning network session to discuss strategies to interrupt cycles of violence and help survivors begin the healing process. Visit our blog to read key takeaways and access resources that can support trauma-responsive policies and programs.
