City of Saco Government

City of Saco Government Welcome to S**o, a city that is “friendly by nature.” Traditionally a mill city, S**o was at leader of textile manufacturing in the industrial age.

The City of S**o, located at Maine’s south coast gateway, has been praised for retaining its small city character and high quality of life. Thanks to diversification of the city’s economy and the hard work of its citizens, S**o is thriving once again. To small entrepreneurs, big corporations, and business owners of all sorts, S**o is widely appreciated for its quality labor force, variety and flex

ibility of affordable sites for business growth, and a decidedly pro-business attitude. S**o is ideally situated less 20 minutes south of the major population center of Greater Portland, allowing short, easy commutes. Boston is less than two hours by car. The beautiful new S**o Transportation Center serves five daily Amtrak Downeaster runs to Portland and Boston, and the cities and towns in between. The City of S**o’s handsome and historic Main Street is lined with a wide variety of businesses, ranging from medical offices to boutiques, from legal firms to restaurants. A Main Street Maine Community, S**o is proud of its beautiful Main Street/Pepperell Square shopping area, promoted by S**o Main Street through a number of annual festivals and community events. This group keeps S**o’s fleet running!

It’s Automotive Service Professional Week and we’d like to take a moment to recognize S**o Public Works’ talented team of mechanics, including Bill Allen, Ralph Rice, Joe Couto, Ed Maloney, and Spencer Hutchinson, Parts Manager Bill Phillips, and Fleet Manager John Wentworth.

They’re responsible for keeping every City vehicle in good shape to provide essential services to the community, from school buses and plow trucks to police vehicles and fire engines. From July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, the team performed almost 900 scheduled services in their garage.

Please join us in thanking our hard-working team of automotive professionals!

BSOOB Transit will begin construction soon on an exciting project that will add state-of-the-art overhead pantographic bus charging infrastructure to the S**o Transportation Center at 138 Main Street.

The charging infrastructure and two additional electric buses are funded by $3.6 million in federal grants and will replace some of the oldest buses in BSOOB’s fleet. Electric buses cost significantly less per mile to operate, and the new chargers will increase the range of those vehicles so they can complete an 18-hour service day.

There will be impacts to parking and operations at the S**o Transportation Center during construction, which is scheduled to take place from June 8, 2026, through August 2026. The station building and train platforms will continue to be fully operational throughout construction, bike racks will remain in place, and safe pedestrian access will be maintained. Vehicle traffic along Gooch Street will continue to flow and there will be no impact to Main Street traffic from this project.

Learn more about the temporary changes to short-term parking and bus pick-up locations on BSOOB’s website: bsoobtransit.org/saco-transportation-center-construction-starts-june-8th

Community members with questions or concerns may reach out to BSOOB Transit at (207) 282-5408.

This construction schedule is subject to change, and we’ll communicate any significant updates through our City newsletter. Sign up for our twice-a-month newsletter on our website at sacomaine.org/newsletter.
