This afternoon, SCFD and Wall Lake Fire Department were called for mutual aid to Lake View Fire Department for a large grass/field fire in and around the Tomahawk Marsh wetland north of Lake View. The initial call went out shortly before 1:00, and SCFD trucks returned to the station around 4:00 PM. The firefighting efforts encompassed much of an entire section of land, through waterways and CRP/grassland strips, and involved fire apparatus on all four sides of the section.
Multiple times during this response, fire apparatus had to navigate around general public vehicles checking out the scene. At least one driver got the joy of a roadside conversation with one of Sac City's Finest for disobeying traffic control on M68. And as the main operations were wrapping up and a half dozen apparatus were staged on the roadway awaiting further direction -- all with their emergency lights activated -- a driver drove through the group at 30-40 MPH. On gravel.
Look, we get it - we like watching the fire trucks, too. But please, especially on large responses like this, stay back and out of the way. If you do not have a reason to be on the roads surrounding the scene, give us room to work and do our job safely. And if you do have to drive through a staging area, PLEASE, slow down.
