Sac City Fire Department has been hosting a Firefighter 1 class this summer, training firefighters from 6 area departments to be certified firefighters. The students have been meeting on Tuesday nights since April, and will continue for several more months.

Today, they had the opportunity to work with and learn from the Region V HAZMAT team from Fort Dodge Fire Department, and get a tour of the Region V HAZMAT response truck.

If you drove through downtown tonight and noticed some activity near the courthouse...

No, there was not an emergency. Tonight, we set up our tower and spent time getting members familiar with the setup and operation of the truck.

This truck is not frequently used - but absolutely necessary when it's needed, and training with it keeps us ready to respond.

Tonight, we worked on setting up and connecting the truck to a pressurized water source (hydrant), versus a rural operation where we would draft from a portable tank, and haul water to the scene in tankers.

With the potential for severe weather on the forecast for this evening, we want to take a moment to refresh everyone on the outdoor sirens.

- The sirens are activated for any potentially damaging weather conditions - tornado, high winds (70+ MPH), and potentially large hail.
- They are activated at the request of the NWS and/or local law enforcement and fire departments serving as storm spotters
- THERE IS NO ALL-CLEAR SIGNAL! The sirens will sound for the duration of the threat

And most importantly - the sirens are an outdoor warning system only - they are not intended or guaranteed to alert you inside your home or place of employment. You should always have an additional method to recieve alerts - local television stations, local FM radio, NOAA radio, or a mobile device with Wireless Emergency Alerts activated and/or trusted apps in use.

Have a member on your fire department that needs to get their FF1 training done? We're hosting a class starting in May, through Iowa Central Community College. Classes will be on Tuesday nights at the Sac City fire station, with some additional sessions added in through the course as schedules allow.

If you drove past the elementary school tonight, you may have seen something a little odd looking.

The new pumper we put into service this past summer features a nozzle on the front bumper, controlled from a joystick in the cab. After a few fire responses with the truck, we have realized that our members are not the gamers we once may have been, so tonight we practiced in teams, one driving the truck while the passenger controls the nozzle, trying to knock over traffic cones.

We definitely benefitted from the training, even if it looked to the passer-by like we were just playing around!

A reminder - the daylight savings time switch is a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors -- and also to check the age of the detector itself. Smoke detectors should be replaced after 10 years!

We have had several calls over the last few months related to old/outdated detectors. Its better to replace them early than to have them fail on you when you need them!
