The Village of Rutland Code Enforcement Department announces that Mayor Tyler M. Eblin has signed an executive order condemning the former Rutland Furniture Company building located at 243 Main Street in the Village of Rutland.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, by order of Mayor Eblin, the Code Enforcement Department applied plywood covering to the ground level door entries and windows at the former commercial structure to prevent unwanted entry by children or other persons who may desire to trespass the structure, placing their health and safety at risk.

Pursuant to Title 15, Chapter 152, Subchapter D of the Rutland Municipal Code, the owner of the former Rutland Furniture Company building must now forthwith take action to prevent the building’s collapse, and must, within 45 days, substantially repair or raze the structure.

If the owner fails to take action, the Code Enforcement Department may file a criminal complaint of permitting a public nuisance, in violation of division (A) of section 152.275 of the Rutland Municipal Code, a misdemeanor of the third degree, with the Village Prosecutor for prosecution before the Rutland Mayor’s Court.

“The Village of Rutland has exhausted all attempts to remedy the conditions of this structure in consultation with the owner without success thus far,” comments Mayor Eblin. “As the clock ticks, this building continues to significantly deteriorate, and it’s critical the owner takes immediate action.”

The building was selected for demolition by the Meigs County Land Reutilization Corporation utilizing funding through the Ohio Department of Development; however, it is unclear when this funding will be released, all the meanwhile, the structural integrity of the building significantly worsens.

“If the building can be demolished utilizing grant funds within the next 45 days, this would be ideal for all parties involved,” comments Mayor Eblin. “If not, the owner will need to make a best effort to address the situation.”
