Today, Rutland local members of the Vermont Department of Corrections joined the Rutland City Police Department and other local agencies in carrying the Flame of Hope through our community in support of Special Olympics Vermont, Law Enforcement Torch Run.

It was wonderful to see so many members of the public out cheering on the runners and supporting such an incredible cause. Events like these are a great reminder of the strength of our community and the positive impact that can be made when agencies come together for something bigger than themselves.

Thank you to everyone who participated, organized, and showed their support along the route today.

A big shout-out to Northeast Correctional Complex Assistant Superintendent Wayne Pittman and Peer Support Coordinator Tiffanie Timian for their outstanding work partnering with the VA to bring a Veterans Benefits Fair to the Northeast Correctional Complex.

This event is open to all Vermont Department of Corrections employees who are current or former members of the military. Representatives from the VA will be on-site from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at NECC on June 9th, 2026 to provide information and support related to VA claims and eligibility, mental health services, Vet Center+ resources, and more.

Thank you, Wayne and Tiffanie, for your continued dedication to supporting our military-connected staff and ensuring they have access to valuable resources and services. Your efforts make a meaningful difference across the Department.

Who’s a Good Fit for Corrections?

Some of the best Correctional Officers come from hospitality and retail backgrounds.

Why?

Because they already know how to:
• Communicate face to face with people from all walks of life
• Stay calm during difficult interactions
• De escalate conflict and handle complaints professionally
• Work as part of a team in fast paced environments
• Build confidence, professionalism, and people skills

These careers build strong communication and interpersonal abilities that are critical in corrections.

One of the biggest advantages is that many hospitality and retail professionals come in without bad habits from previous correctional or law enforcement environments. We can teach the security side. The people skills are often much harder to teach.

If you have experience in customer service, restaurants, hotels, retail, or other public facing roles, you may be a better fit for corrections than you think.

We encourage those working in hospitality and retail to consider a career with the Vermont Department of Corrections at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility.

Your diverse background may be more valuable in corrections than you think.
