TRANSPARENCY TUESDAY | What does the research say about prekindergarten — and why does it matter?

There is a window.

Researchers who study child development will tell you that the years before kindergarten are unlike any other period in a child's life. The brain is growing faster, forming connections more rapidly, and absorbing the world more deeply than it ever will again. What happens in those years — the language a child hears, the relationships they form, the curiosity that gets encouraged or ignored — shapes everything that comes after.

That's not sentiment. That's science.

In the short term, children who participate in quality prekindergarten experiences arrive at kindergarten ready to learn. They know how to sit with a story, work alongside a friend, follow a direction, and ask a question. They recognize letters and numbers. They have words for what they feel. These may sound like small things. They are not.

In the intermediate term, those early advantages compound. Children with quality early learning experiences are more likely to read proficiently by third grade — a milestone researchers identify as one of the strongest predictors of long-term academic success. They are less likely to need intensive intervention. They are more likely to stay on track.

And in the long term? The research is striking. Adults who had access to quality early childhood education are more likely to graduate high school, pursue education beyond it, maintain stable employment, and contribute to their communities. The return on investment in early childhood — measured in human flourishing, not dollars — is extraordinary.

None of this happens by accident. It happens because of intentional, high-quality programs staffed by people who understand that what they do every day matters more than most of us can see in the moment.

🌟 Testimonial Thursday | Growing Leaders Through Camp Innovate 🌟

One of the most rewarding parts of Camp Innovate is watching students grow from curious campers into confident leaders.

Lux Hodge is a wonderful example of that journey. After participating in Camp Innovate as both an elementary and middle school student, Lux returned this summer as a Student Leader, helping guide activities, mentor younger campers, and create the same positive experiences that helped shape her own love of learning.

While we're proud to spotlight Lux this week, her story represents something much larger. Camp Innovate's Student Leadership program provides high school students with meaningful opportunities to serve as mentors, role models, and ambassadors for younger learners. Through this experience, student leaders develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills while giving back to a program that helped inspire them.

Thank you to Lux and all of our Camp Innovate Student Leaders for investing your time, energy, and talents into the next generation of innovators, creators, and problem-solvers. Your leadership is helping make Camp Innovate a truly special experience for lots of Rutherford County students each summer.

TRANSPARENCY TUESDAY | Each year, school performance data emerge in stages. Right now, we're in the middle of that process. Preliminary results are just that: preliminary. They don't yet include every indicator that will factor into final grades, they haven’t been certified by the State Board of Education, and they will continue to shift as additional data are incorporated. We want to be clear about that upfront.

With that context established, we also want to share some early encouraging news, because transparency means sharing good news as it emerges, not just waiting until everything is finalized.

Here's what the preliminary data are telling us: improvement across our schools this year is broad-based. Among schools where we can make meaningful year-over-year comparisons, schools that improved did so by a substantial margin, gaining, on average, roughly three times what schools that saw softer results lost. That asymmetry matters. The district is moving, and moving in the right direction in the majority of schools.

At the elementary level in particular, the preliminary picture is genuinely encouraging. Multiple schools posted significant gains, and the tier as a whole is showing the kind of broad-based improvement that reflects sustained instructional effort across many classrooms and many buildings, not just isolated bright spots.

We'll continue sharing updates as the data mature. Growth scores, which are among the most meaningful indicators of student progress, won't be available until late August, and they will add important context to everything we're seeing now. Stay tuned.
