Fire District Spotlight:

Fire Chief Brody Miller

Fire Chief Brody Miller was a recent graduate of the Chief Fire Executive program through the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association. This was a 2 year program that focused on professional development, leadership, departmental growth, community involvement and fire service management.

This achievement is a testament to the dedication to the fire service, and the professionalism that is held by our administrative staff. Chief Miller serves as the Fire Chief over all of St. Martin Parish and this achievement is proof of our commitment to a professional, community focused, fire service agency that serves the citizens that depend on us daily.

Yesterday morning, firefighters in Cade were dispatched to a busted gas line on Smede Highway.

When firefighters arrived, they found that a pipeline running through a field had been struck and was leaking. Per our HAZMAT Response protocols, life safety and evacuation took precedence. Firefighters began to coordinate emergency evacuations with the St. Martin Sheriff’s Office.

Lafayette Fire Department HAZMAT and Louisiana State Police HAZMAT were contacted and requested to respond.

The scene was isolated and controlled with the interoperability working of multiple agencies.

We would like to thank firefighters from our part time staff, Cade Volunteer Fire Department, Evangeline Volunteer Fire Department, St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. Martin Parish Government, St. Martin Parish OHSEP, Acadian Ambulance Service Inc, Louisiana DEQ, Lafayette Fire Department, and the St. Martin Parish Emergency Dispatch Center.

As of today, March 9, 2026, the burn ban has been lifted in St. Martin Parish. Private burning is no longer restricted.

However, Parish Ordinance 21-08-1329 prohibits the burning of unnatural products (housing materials, plastics, trash, etc) and only allows for natural products from the property (limbs, grass, etc). It also places whoever burns liable for damages to neighboring properties. Whoever is conducting burns must also stay with the burning material for the duration of the burn, or it will be treated as an unmanned, nuisance burn which will be extinguished and possibly cited for fines.

Please keep in mind current wind conditions and fire spread prevention. Please be responsible and keep our community safe!!

This morning, firefighters in St. Martinville were dispatched to smoke in area of Capritto-Forty Arpent Road. Upon arrival firefighters found a large pile of pallets on fire. The fire was extinguished without incident.

Remember that while we are currently under a burn ban and no outside burning is allowed unless an agricultural practice, burning of trash or waste of any kind not organic violates parish burn ordinance 21-08-1329-OR. Only natural products from that property may be burned (sticks and cut grass, no trash or household items).

We would like to thank our part time staff, Evangeline Voluntee Fire Department, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office and the St. Martin Parish Emergency Dispatch Center.

Burning of trash, brush, and debris.
Uncontained campfires and bonfires.

The ban does not apply to:
Supervised outdoor cooking activities using elevated and controlled settings.
Prescribed burns by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) or certified individuals

Violating this Executive Order may result in both civil and/or criminal penalties, including fines up to $500.00.

We urge all residents to comply with the ban to protect our community and first responders. If you spot smoke or a fire, please report it immediately by calling 911.

Firefighters are currently on the scene of a field fire north of Breaux Bridge. Please be mindful of private burning; this means vegetation dryness and wind conditions. With winds gusting like today makes for very easy fire spread conditions.
