The Russellville-lohman Fire Protection District has lost Melvin Stubinger, District Board Chairman, former fire chief, fire fighter, and community servant. Mel's dedication and leadership have left a strong legacy for the community.
Mel began his career with the department in 1988 as a firefighter. He was fire chief from 1999 to 2013, became a board member in 2015, and was a chairman of the board in 2017. Mel's was the chief of the Cole County First Responders for a time.

Under his leadership, the community has seen a growth in quality and purpose of the fire department. Improved funding has provided for new and better equipment and fire trucks. During his time, firefighter training and skills have improved for a dedicated group of firefighters.

The District Board and department members have a deep appreciation for the legacy he has left.

We would like to thank the members for the extreme hard work, dedication, and hustle they put forth yesterday afternoon and evening. They responded to assist neighboring agencies as far as south of Eldon and also multiple fires within our own district. A HUGE thank you to anyone else who assisted in this desperate time of need due to the amount of heavy wind and manpower being spread thin due to the multiple fires. Due to the extent of the situation, the auxiliary was activated to bring supplies such as water and snacks to keep the guys continuing to perform. We would like to send out our sincere gratitude for coming to the aid. The community really was an amazing asset also as they assisted neighbors, relatives, and friends with firefighting efforts to help contain the fire.
