A big thank you April King and Peak of Ohio for taking the time to spend some time with our team and get to know the people behind the badges. April didn’t just write about what we do; she took the time to see it for herself by jumping in and experiencing it firsthand. I think she did a great job of capturing something that isn’t always easy to explain about this job: we have a responsibility to enforce the law and hold people accountable, but we can do that without losing our empathy or compassion for the person standing in front of us.
None of us have all the answers, and we all have our moments. Our officers are human, and so are the people we serve. That’s part of what makes this job both challenging and rewarding. Sometimes people need to be held accountable, sometimes they need a little grace, and often they need both.
What I’m proud of is having a group of officers who understand that those things can exist at the same time. We’re not perfect cops working in a perfect community. We’re people trying to do a difficult job, for people who are sometimes having a pretty difficult day. Thanks, April, for taking the time to tell that story.
