What a great way get kids involved with garden. With so many storms, there are plenty of pinecones on the ground. Instead of Easter Egg hunt, how about a pinecone hunt. We use them around our mailbox and to edge beds. What a wonderful and lasting way to celebrate your kid’s achievement in the garden.

Today in the handicapped garden: Nothing better than free deep rooted native plants for erosion control, filter strip for pollutants/chemicals/silt and anchor rock riprap by planting in pockets between the stones. We have a large supply of free plants and pine straw growing in an abandoned area. A few limbs add structure to discourage Lawncare guys/critters and to provide temporary structure for new plants until well established.

Being a great neighbor starts with what we hide behind our privacy fence. It’s our storage area for our unmentionables, mechanicals, trash and junk. Its also the backside for Coco’s B&B. As you know, we have to buy bottled water for a property with an iron water well 😣. The store won’t take them back! So we make pots out of the bottoms for the 100s of items we propagated and divided to rebuild our LL gardens with ferns, hosta, lily of the valley, Egyptian walking onion, chives, Jerusalem artichokes, fireweed, daylilies, stellas, sedums and succulents, daffodils, lovage and a host of other perennial herbs. The bottle tops are great to slide over limbs to airlayer more plants like forsythia, raspberries, native honeysuckle and spiarea. The proble is the bottled blow all around our enclosed storage area. So do the shipping coolers we collect for nonprofits managing cat colonies. They really blow around. So we have a bunch of the collapsible totes. No more blowing around. All neatly stacked upside down under the tarp. So it’s nice to have storage area behind the fence cleaned up again after the last storm. Construction stuff, trash cans and compost bin are all straightened up too.

I don’t know what was up with all the crazy winter weather but today was a perfect day to get outside to finish mulching our handicapped access area and all our trees. We even managed to finished pruning our landscape grasses. I’m sure the birds appreciated their seeds with all the snow. We have one tree left to mulch because dad piled leaves around it. We’ve got to get those leaves out and up to the raised bed on the other side of the house first. Our new leaf sweeper worked great today. We have 8 bales left to do around the house. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait months again to get another beautiful day like today.
