“Lest We Forget…”

The vision slowly becomes reality. The new wayfinding signs marking the locations of Fallen RPD Officers Garrison and Wachendorf have been placed at East Hill Cemetery. The QR codes link visitors to biographical information for each officer.

A very heartfelt THANK YOU to all of those who supported this project including East Hill Cemetery, the Rush County Community Foundation, Cain Signs, Delbert Frazier, and Chief Bob Bridges.

And, a VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to everyone who has participated in the “Can You Get Away?” 5K! Your registration fees and donations directly contributed to this project. This is a further step in the direction of creating the full-scale memorial on the Police Department lawn. We hope you will continue to support this memorial project by future race participation!

We were excited for tomorrow’s fireworks, but Mother Nature has other plans.

We hope now you’ll take the opportunity on Saturday July 13th to start your day with a bang AND end your day with a bang. Start your day with a 5k, beat the local cops in a foot chase, and enjoy a celebratory freedom donut. Then, come back out Saturday night, watch the fireworks and celebrate your freedom!

Members of the Rushville Police Department met on hallowed ground this morning at East Hill Cemetery to provide some much needed love to the headstones of our two Fallen Officers, Fred Wachendorf (EOW: 2/4/1922) and Walter Garrison (EOW: 2/3/1931), both feloniously killed in the line of duty.

Their sacrifice is the reason for the “Can You Get Away?” 5K as we endeavor to not only maintain the sanctity of their final resting place but also construct a monument worthy of their memory. We hope you will join us for the July 13th race and assist us in our mission!

(Note: We will be revisiting Patrolman Garrison’s site in the near future to further restore and preserve it.)

The 2024 "Can You Get Away?" 5K is fast approaching! This year's race will be a traditional 5K held on the morning of Saturday July 13th. Other than the race being held in the morning instead of the evening, all other aspects are the same. Participants in all running divisions will compete for medals, and anyone able to beat the top time of our fastest officer will receive the coveted "Get Out Of Jail Free" medal.

We hope you will come out and take a run with us on July 13th. All funds raised will go to support the construction of the Fallen Officer and Police K9 Memorial to be constructed at the front entrance of the Rushville Police Department. Ground-breaking on this memorial is expected before the end of the year thanks to generous people like you.
