It is brilliant for a popular candidate to stay away from any specifics on policy during a campaign and to make the election about vague plans for broad positive actions... and to make it about an us and them struggle- an existential conflict between the good (us) and the bad (them)
Supporters will hop on the fan wagon, wave flags, cite slogans and interpret the vagueries in their candidate's positions in a way that positively reflects their own thinking. They will fill in any blanks with whatever they want to see and hear... and create in their minds a candidate that perfectly represents their aspirations and fears.
