Children may not always have the words to explain what is happening at home—but they see it. They hear it. They feel it.

Domestic violence leaves an imprint far beyond the moment of violence. It can shape a child’s understanding of love, safety, trust, and relationships for years to come. A home filled with fear teaches a child to survive when they should be learning how to dream.

This is why ending domestic violence is also about protecting the next generation.

Every child deserves to fall asleep feeling safe. Every child deserves to grow up knowing that love does not hurt, control, threaten, or terrify. Every child deserves a childhood filled with possibility—not trauma they will spend adulthood trying to heal from.

When we support survivors, strengthen domestic violence programs, and invest in prevention, we are doing more than responding to today’s crisis. We are interrupting cycles and changing the future.

They see it. They hear it. They feel it.
And they deserve better.

The Cost of Silence is too high.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This month, NMCADV is asking New Mexico to confront The Cost of Silence.

Domestic violence does not always leave wounds we can see. It can look like a family searching for safe housing. A child carrying fear into the classroom. A survivor rebuilding a life after leaving everything behind. An advocate answering one more crisis call when resources are already stretched thin. A story never told because speaking still does not feel safe.

Some of the most important stories are the ones we never hear.

Throughout October, we will shine a light on what domestic violence costs our families, workplaces, healthcare systems, communities—and most importantly, survivors. But we will also talk about what happens when we refuse to remain silent: hope grows, communities respond, resources become lifelines, and survivors are reminded that they do not have to stand alone.

Domestic violence is not a private issue. It is a community issue. And ending it requires all of us.

This October, listen. Believe. Learn. Speak up. Support the organizations doing this work every day.

Because silence has a cost.
And hope is something we can build together.

💜 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

Today begins Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to bring domestic violence out of the shadows, support survivors, educate our communities, and work toward a culture where abuse is never accepted as normal.

Domestic violence is not about a bad relationship or a simple disagreement. It is about power, control, fear, and abuse.

And prevention cannot rest on the shoulders of those who may experience violence. We must also talk about the choices of those who cause harm—about consent, respect, healthy relationships, boundaries, accountability, and the responsibility each of us has to create safer communities.

This month, we invite you to:

💜 Learn the signs of abuse and unhealthy relationships.
💜 Listen without judgment when someone reaches out.
💜 Believe survivors and respect their choices.
💜 Teach children and young people what healthy relationships look like.
💜 Challenge attitudes and behaviors that normalize control, intimidation, or violence.
💜 Support organizations working every day to provide safety and healing.
💜 Speak up for a community where everyone deserves to live free from fear and abuse.

At HEAL/The Nest, we believe survivors deserve more than survival. They deserve safety, dignity, choice, healing, and the opportunity to build a future free from abuse.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing information, resources, stories of hope, and ways you can be part of the solution.

Domestic violence is a community issue. Prevention is a community responsibility. And change starts with all of us.

💜 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Let’s turn awareness into action.
