The City of Ruidoso Downs is exploring new opportunities to build on our community’s rich equestrian heritage!

We invite local equine professionals, business owners, and community members to join the conversation as we explore ideas, share perspectives, and discuss what the future of equestrian tourism could look like in Ruidoso Downs.

Join us on Monday, October 19, 2026 from 3-5PM!

From competitive events to recreational trail riding, our region has incredible potential to become a destination for horse enthusiasts from across the Southwest and beyond.

Great ideas start with community collaboration!

Old photographs give us a glimpse into the history of our area, including our neighboring Mescalero Apache community, but the story of this land stretches back long before cameras could capture it.

Long before our community became the place we know today, Indigenous peoples had a rich history throughout the mountains, valleys, and landscapes of southern New Mexico.

Their traditions, knowledge, and connection to the land have been passed down through generations, contributing to the unique cultural heritage of our region and the state of New Mexico.

Today, we celebrate the history, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, honoring the generations who came before us and our Indigenous neighbors who continue to enrich the communities we call home.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

Can you guess the breed of this beautiful white horse standing tall at the Hubbard Museum of the American West?

Known for its beauty, strength, loyalty, and intelligence, this breed is one of the oldest in the world and has been treasured for centuries. Bedouin legend tells of how God fashioned the desert wind into a creature that “shall fly without wings.”

This is the only white horse among the museum’s iconic horse sculptures! Next time you are in Ruidoso Downs, stop by to admire it in person.

Let us know your guess of breed in the comments! 🐎
