Denver North Park and Pacific Railroad

Denver North Park and Pacific Railroad An expansive and sprawling model train landscape created, maintained, and owned by Mr. Joe Barnhart. 30 years in the making and still a work in progress.

This little piece of equipment is kept around the back of the trainyard. The job of this humble piece of equipment is to lift engines and cars so that the wheels may be replaced when they become worn or when they develop flat spots. A flat tire on a car can be a nuisance that can ruin your day, a flat wheel on a train can be a nuisance that will ruin EVERYONE’S day, especially when it derails.

This photo is of a small but busy trainyard. Another great model in DNP&P. In the bottom left corner, beneath the sign that says “North Park”, you can one of several wired switches that exist all along the track. They are functional remnants of older systems. These days, Joe mainly controls DNP&P by the control station featured in the album “Controls” and by using an app on his iPhone that is connected to the network he has set up in the facility.

A couple more pictures of this particular structure will follow.

This is a photo of part of a sawmill that is located in a section of DNP&P. It is just one of the many locations built to add more detail to this miniature world. It should go without saying that all of the vehicles chosen by Joe for use in these models are carefully chosen so that they match to scale with everything else on the track. The added realism is well worth the effort that goes into finding just the right piece. Beyond the sawmill can be seen other buildings and landscapes of DNP&P, stretching far back into the other part of the facility.

Here is a photo of a train as it speeds around a corner in the bottom of a deep ravine. The mountainous region on this section of the track was so high that the picture had to be taken by carefully leaning over the peak while standing on top of a stool. The motion blur is because of the terrible camera and it's useless shutter speed settings, not because the train was going incredibly fast, of course.

This photo is another angle of the previous aerial picture, shot from the other end of the facility. In this photo, you can see many of the models that Joe Barnhart made for DNP&P. Some models (such as the massive Goliath Grain Co. model that you can’t help but notice) Joe built himself, others are kits that he bought years and years ago. They all have their own places of honor along the track.

Here is another view of the area on the track near Baytown Mfg. Slightly blurry (apologies for that), but you can make out the details of the switches on the track. You can also see more examples of the details that Joe put into the flora of DNP&P.

In this photo is a model Joe made for the fictitious company Baytown Manufacturing. Detail is important in all the models he makes, from the trees to the grass, even the cracks in the concrete and the stone littered around the slab and between the tracks. Two rail cars are parked at the loading dock, ready to be loaded up. And of course, the ever-present rails, leading off into a complex system of switches in the distance. Joe even seems to perfectly capture scale in all of his models. Notice the size of the car near the middle of the photo in comparison to the cargo truck behind it. You almost get a sense that this photo was taken from a great height of an actual facility.
