After the complete Ground Stop was issued, it was determined there was at least one aircraft in the skies that had no intentions of landing at an airport. Somewhere over eastern Ohio was Flight 93, the crew had stopped communicating, and the plane was taking a sharp turn heading back east.
Two fighter pilots who were in a ready condition for training flights for the day were ordered to take to the skies, locate Flight 93, and ensure it never made it to whatever nefarious target the terrorist had planned. They took off without hesitation, flying as fast as the jets could go, in the direction of the last known area of the commercial jet.
There was one problem: neither aircraft had mu*****ns on it. There was no way to shoot down the aircraft. Without hesitation the two pilots made the decision that when they found the hijacked plane they would crash directly into it. This mission was, if it happened as planned, was certain death. No way to survive ejecting from the plane at this altitude or speed.
Lt. Heather Penney & Lt Col. Marc Sassevillle never found Flight 93. At 10:03am the passengers of the plane stormed the cockpit and ultimately caused the plane to crash into a field in Shanksville Pennsylvania.
4 minutes prior to this, the South Tower of the WTC had collapsed to the ground. 25 minutes later, at 10:28am, the North Tower fell.
The American people watched much of this unfold live on their TVโs, forever engraved into their memory.
