After the complete Ground Stop was issued, it was determined there was at least one aircraft in the skies that had no intentions of landing at an airport. Somewhere over eastern Ohio was Flight 93, the crew had stopped communicating, and the plane was taking a sharp turn heading back east.

Two fighter pilots who were in a ready condition for training flights for the day were ordered to take to the skies, locate Flight 93, and ensure it never made it to whatever nefarious target the terrorist had planned. They took off without hesitation, flying as fast as the jets could go, in the direction of the last known area of the commercial jet.

There was one problem: neither aircraft had mu*****ns on it. There was no way to shoot down the aircraft. Without hesitation the two pilots made the decision that when they found the hijacked plane they would crash directly into it. This mission was, if it happened as planned, was certain death. No way to survive ejecting from the plane at this altitude or speed.

Lt. Heather Penney & Lt Col. Marc Sassevillle never found Flight 93. At 10:03am the passengers of the plane stormed the cockpit and ultimately caused the plane to crash into a field in Shanksville Pennsylvania.

4 minutes prior to this, the South Tower of the WTC had collapsed to the ground. 25 minutes later, at 10:28am, the North Tower fell.

The American people watched much of this unfold live on their TVโ€™s, forever engraved into their memory.

On September 11th, 51 minutes after the first plane struck the World Trade Center in NYC, Flight 77 struck the Pentagon in Washington DC.

5 minutes later, the FAA issued a complete Ground Stop of all air travel over the US airspace. This was the first time in history that all commercial & private aircraft were grounded across the country. By the afternoon, the only aircraft in the sky over the continental US was Air Force One.

On Tuesday, September 11th 2001, at 8:46am firefighters from FDNY Engine 7 / Ladder 1 / Battalion 1 were out investigating a gas leak in the streets of downtown Manhattan. Embedded with them were two men filming a documentary following the life of a young firefighter. They never thought they would capture on video the first of many catastrophic events that would unfold that morning 25 years ago.

We at Royersford Fire Department have not forgotten that day, though the reality is many of our members were not even born yet. For those of us who are old enough, we remember. We remember the 343 FDNY, 23 NYPD, and the 37 Port Authority Officers. We remember the 2,606 civilians who were in the WTC and perished.

We remember the 125 employees at the Pentagon that died that morning.

We remember the 246 passengers and crew of the four hijacked planes who lost their lives.

Itโ€™s been 25 years, but for some it feels like yesterday. Young firefighters just starting their careers that year are eligible for retirement this year.

***DISCLAIMER: The video weโ€™ve included can be distressing for some to watch. We have edited the audio to remove the profanity. Viewer discretion is advised.***

Yesterday afternoon your Royersford Fire Department and neighboring agencies had the honor to es**rt some dedicated folks from Tunnel to Towers Foundation as they made their annual trip to Manhattan New York. Every year they gather a group of athletes who trek from the Flight 93 Memorial, to the Pentagon, and then up to the World Trade Center.

These athletes were doing better than anticipated yesterday, so unfortunately we could not provide them with the welcome to Royersford we planned as they were a full hour ahead of schedule!

Thanks to the participants and members of RFD who were able to quickly mobilize and help out with the es**rt.

Last evening at 2156 hours (9:56pm) your Royersford Fire Department were dispatched with area mutual aid departments to the train tracks for a train crash involving a motor vehicle. The original caller was a representative of Norfolk Southern reporting the incident was between Vaughn Rd & Springer Town Rd in Upper Providence Township. A crew of 8 volunteers were in station finishing up weekly training and on the street within moments and on scene in 4 minutes. Upon arrival, and through additional calls coming in to the 911 center, it was determined the vehicle originally was at the Arch St crossing when it was struck and was not occupied at the time of impact.

Upon the arrival of Deputy Chief 98 he established Railroad Command at Arch St until we could determine the extent of the incident. The vehicle was subsequently located by members of UPT Fire & Emergency Services and Liberty Fire Co., Spring City still on the tracks approximately a quarter mile from the original impact locations. Crews there determined there were no continuing hazards regarding the car, and after speaking with the train crew there were no immediate hazards to the train. At 2211 hours RR Command was able to hold the response to what was on location, with additional Fire Police to continue in for traffic control.

At about 0020 hours (1220am) the train, which was blocking Main St & Arch St, began moving. About 30 minutes later all RFD units cleared the scene and opened up the roadways to normal traffic.

Dispatched units, in no particular order or job duty, include:
UPT Fire & Emergency Services
Liberty Fire Co., Spring City
Limerick Fire Department
Friendship Ambulance
Phoenixville Fire Department
Kimberton Fire Company
Trappe Fire Company No. 1
Perkiomen Township Fire Company
Special thank you to Spring City Borough Emergency Management for their assistance in coming across the river to help out.
