MassWildlife is planning a prescribed fire in the grasslands and woodlands at the Birch Hill Dam on Tuesday, September 3. At least one more burn is planned for this fall. The target areas are the grassland fields surrounding the dam and a small field across the Millers River. Other burns will focus on the “rifle range” shrubland. The purpose of the prescribed fires is to promote habitat for wildlife. The reintroduction of fire to the property is expected to enhance grasslands, oak woodlands, and early successional habitats. Several rare and common species benefit from prescribed fire such as ruffed grouse, wild turkey, numerous pollinators, and plants such as rare grasses, rare sedges, and many types of wildflowers. Prescribed fires are conducted by a specially trained crew skilled in fire management operations. Safety is emphasized in all phases of fire management, and the burn will occur within prescribed parameters including winds, temperature, and fuel moisture. Please stay away from target areas during operations and please pardon our smoke. We will try to minimize any impacts to the public. Learn more about prescribed fire at mass.gov/prescribedfire.
