After waiting for over a decade, the Port of Royal Slope finally gets energized from their new substation!

July 30, 2018 - Royal City, WA

In 2004, Grant County PUD purchased 1.25 acres from the Port of Royal Slope with the intent to build a substation that would service the Royal Slope area. The Port of Royal Slope had inquired numerous times about when the Red Rock substation would be built and received letters & verbal promises stating that the Red Rock substation would be built and the Grant County PUD had already come up with designs. As time went on, the Grant County PUD instead upgraded and expanded other substations and the Red Rock substation seemingly fell off the radar. It wasn’t until a potential business tried to expand their operations to Royal City that the Port of Royal Slope realized that they did not have the power to accommodate this potential business. Not only was there not enough power, the current substations were already maxed out and were dipping into the reserves. The Port of Royal Slope saw the big need for a new substation and they hired Western Pacific Engineering as a consultant to put the Red Rock substation back on the radar and get it up and running to service the Royal Slope area and in time to accommodate the new business. Kevin Richards of Western Pacific, along with Port of Royal Slope Commissioners Frank Mianecki Jr., Alan Schrom and Davey Miller presented to the Grant County PUD on June 12th and July 10th, 2018 their need for the new Red Rock substation.
The Grant County PUD has finally agreed to put the Red Rock substation first in queue and provided the Port of Royal Slope with a resolution on July 24th, 2018 to get the substation up and running. Staff and Commissioners of the Grant County PUD made comments that they’ve been “talking way too long about it”, “it’s time to get it done”, “there’s a need for it”, and for “general community growth”. The Port of Royal Slope has worked very hard to on this project so that they can offer businesses much-needed amenities and to provide Royal City with full time, year-round jobs.

“I am proud to be a part of something that my father was involved with getting started as a Royal Slope Port Commissioner a decade and a half ago. I would like to thank everyone involved for their diligent work in the re-energizing of the Red Rock Substation Project. From the PUD Commissioners, management and staff as well as my fellow Port Commissioners, thank you and a special thanks to Dawn Woodard and her efforts to put all the right people together to make this happen.” – Frank Mianecki, Jr., District 1 Port Commissioner

“Awesome to see Grant County PUD Commissioners remember and make good on 10+ year old promise to our Port given all of the bigger issues they face every day.” – Alan Schrom, District 2 Port Commissioner

“Working with the Grant County PUD Commission and staff, we were able to secure a transmission line and substation to the Port of Royal Slope property that the Grant County PUD had purchased in 2004 with plans to build out the substation and supply the growth of the Port and the community.” – Davey Miller, District 3 Port Commissioner
