🇺🇸 Honoring Those Who Answer the Call 🇺🇸

Yesterday evening, our community came together for the First Responder Memorial Dedication as part of the Patriot Day Ceremony.

As the Person County Sheriff’s Office, we are honored to stand alongside the many men and women who dedicate themselves to serving and protecting our community.

This memorial is a tribute to all first responders — those who answer the call, run toward danger, respond when others are in need, and work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our community safe.

It represents the Person County Sheriff’s Office, Roxboro Police Department, Roxboro Fire Department, our volunteer fire departments, Person County Rescue Squad, 9-1-1, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, DOT, lineworkers, and the many others whose service is an essential part of our community.

Different agencies. Different roles. One commitment: serving others.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who worked, volunteered, donated, and helped bring this vision to life. Most importantly, we want to recognize the Person County Veterans Council, whose vision, dedication, and commitment made this memorial possible. Their efforts have created a lasting tribute that will honor our first responders and their service to our community for generations to come.

As we reflect on Patriot Day and the sacrifices made by so many, may this memorial remind us of what service truly means — putting others before yourself, answering the call, and standing ready when your community needs you most.

To every first responder, past and present, thank you for your courage, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to our community.

🇺🇸 The Person County Sheriff’s Office is proud to serve alongside you, and we are grateful to the Person County Veterans Council for making sure the service of our first responders will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 2,200 Stair Climb — Never Forget 🇺🇸

Today, several of our Person County Sheriff’s Office deputies joined members of our community for the 2,200 Stair Climb at Person High School Football Stadium in honor of the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

Each step represented more than a physical challenge. It was a step taken to remember, honor, and pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

We are proud of our deputies for participating in this meaningful event and standing alongside our community to honor the heroes who ran toward danger to help others.

25 years later, we remember.
25 years later, we honor.
25 years later, we will NEVER forget. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 Supporting One of Our Own 🇺🇸

Last night, the Person County Sheriff’s Office, Person County Veterans Council, Veterans Mafia, Person Memorial Hospital and Pastor David Chambers came together over dinner to show our support for Deputy Nicholas Martin and his family as he prepares for deployment.

Sheriff Wilborn shared:
“When one of our own is called to serve, we stand together. Nicholas has the full support of his Sheriff’s Office family and our community. We are proud of him, grateful for his service, and we want his family to know that we’ll be here for them.”

During the evening, Pastor David Chambers spoke about Nicholas and recognized him as a hometown hero, honoring his commitment to serve and the sacrifice he and his family are making.

We are incredibly proud of Nicholas and grateful to everyone who came together to show him and his family that they have a strong community standing behind them.

A special thank you to the Person County Veterans Council, Veterans Mafia, and Pastor David Chambers for joining us in honoring Nicholas and supporting his family.

Stay safe, Nicholas. We’ll be here waiting to welcome you home! 🇺🇸💙

Multi-State ICAC Investigation Leads to Arrest of Austin Vargo

For Immediate Release

Roxboro, NC — September 4, 2026 — The Person County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of Austin Vargo following a multi-state investigation involving the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

The investigation originated in Florida after law enforcement became aware of communications between a juvenile and an individual through an online application. The investigation in Florida resulted in criminal charges, and full-extradition warrants were obtained for Vargo.

Information developed during the Florida investigation subsequently led law enforcement to Person County, North Carolina, where the investigation was continued by the Person County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. W.K. Brown Jr., an ICAC Task Force investigator with the Person County Sheriff’s Office, initiated an investigation in Person County based on information developed during the ongoing multi-state investigation. Sgt. Brown worked closely with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation ICAC Unit and Homeland Security Investigations ICAC, as well as law enforcement partners in Florida.

As a result of the collaborative investigation, Vargo was taken into custody in Person County pursuant to the full-extradition warrants issued by the State of Florida.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional charges may be forthcoming in North Carolina and/or other jurisdictions as investigators continue to review evidence and coordinate with the agencies involved in the investigation.

Sheriff Jason Wilborn stated:
“Protecting children from those who seek to exploit them online is one of the most important responsibilities we have as law enforcement officers. This investigation demonstrates the importance of agencies working together across jurisdictional lines to identify offenders and protect our children. I commend Sgt. Brown and all of our law enforcement partners who have worked diligently throughout this investigation. While an arrest has been made, this investigation is not over, and we will continue to pursue every appropriate avenue to ensure those responsible are held accountable.”

The Person County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Florida law enforcement agencies involved in the initial investigation, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation ICAC Unit, and Homeland Security Investigations ICAC for their assistance and continued partnership throughout this investigation.

The Person County Sheriff’s Office reminds parents and guardians to remain engaged in their children’s online activities and to have ongoing conversations about internet safety. Parents are encouraged to know what applications and platforms their children are using and who they are communicating with online.

This investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time that could compromise the investigation or the privacy of the juvenile involved.

📱 PERSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HOSTS INTERNET SAFETY PRESENTATION FOR COUNTY EMPLOYEES

As students across Person County returned to the classroom today, the Person County Sheriff’s Office was proud to provide an important Internet Safety and ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) presentation for Person County employees.

Sgt. W.K. Brown Jr. with the ICAC Task Force led the presentation, sharing valuable information about the online world children are navigating every day. The presentation addressed social media, online safety, privacy, digital activity, and ways parents and caregivers can recognize potential dangers their children may encounter online.

With the new school year officially underway, the Person County Sheriff’s Office encourages parents and caregivers to make online safety part of the back-to-school conversation. Talk with your children about what they are seeing and doing online, who they are communicating with, and the importance of protecting their personal information.

Interested in having an Internet Safety or ICAC presentation for your organization, school, parent group, or community? The Person County Sheriff’s Office is available to help provide education and resources on keeping children safe online.

📞 To request a presentation, contact the Person County Sheriff’s Office at 336-597-0500.

We appreciate Sgt. Brown for sharing his knowledge and expertise and for his continued commitment to protecting children from online threats.

A new school year means new opportunities to learn—and that includes learning how to stay safe online. 💙

🎒🚔 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDERS 🚔🎒

The Person County Sheriff’s Office wishes all of our students, parents, teachers, and school staff a safe and successful school year! As summer comes to an end and students head back to the classroom, now is a great time to review a few simple safety reminders with your children.

📱 Talk About Online Safety
Check your child’s location-sharing settings.
Remind children not to share personal information or their location on social media.
Encourage them to think carefully about who they are communicating with online.

👧 For Younger Children
Know a parent or guardian’s phone number.
Know their home address.
Know how to reach a parent or guardian at work.
Know how to call 911 in an emergency.

🚶 If Your Child Walks to School
Walk with a buddy whenever possible.
Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks.
Obey traffic signals and watch for vehicles.

🚗 For Teen Drivers
Always wear a seatbelt.
Never use a cell phone while driving.
Make sure insurance and registration information is current.

🛑 Stranger Safety
Never accept a ride from someone you don't know.
Encourage children to avoid engaging with strangers.
Consider establishing a family code word. If someone claims to know your family but doesn't know the code word, leave the situation immediately and find a trusted adult.

A few minutes spent talking about safety now can help our children make smart decisions throughout the school year.
From all of us at the Person County Sheriff’s Office — have a fun, safe, and successful school year! 📚🍎💙
