Today, we commemorate the 61st Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, landmark legislation that helped dismantle barriers to the ballot box and protect the fundamental right to vote for millions of Americans.

The progress secured through the Voting Rights Act was not freely given. It was earned through the courage, sacrifice, and determination of those who believed every voice deserves to be heard and every vote deserves to count.

As we reflect on this historic milestone, we are reminded that the work of protecting voting rights continues. Recent discussions surrounding polling locations in Tarrant County underscore why we must remain vigilant in ensuring every eligible voter has a meaningful opportunity to participate in our democracy.

The right to vote is precious. It is powerful. And it is worth protecting.

As elected officials and engaged citizens, we all share a responsibility to strengthen civic participation, expand voter education, and ensure every Texan understands the power of their voice.

The Voting Rights Act is more than a chapter in our history—it is a continuing call to action. Let us honor those who came before us by educating, organizing, and encouraging every eligible voter to make their voice heard.

Two fatal shootings involving ICE agents in less than one week. One in Houston. Now another in Maine.

My heart is heavy.

As details continue to emerge from the shooting involving ICE agents in Maine, I am reminded that behind every headline is a human life, a family, and a community forever changed. This comes just days after the fatal shooting in Houston. Both incidents remain under investigation.

Here at home, our office has received reports from constituents of ICE activity in communities across North Texas, including Irving, Grand Prairie, Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, and Rowlett, often during the early morning hours.

I encourage our community to stay informed, remain calm, and know your rights.

If you encounter federal immigration officers:
• Remain calm.
• You have the right to remain silent.
• Do not open your door unless officers present a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
• Do not sign documents without first speaking with an attorney.

Knowledge is not about creating fear. It is about ensuring people understand their constitutional rights and are prepared to exercise them peacefully and lawfully.

No matter where we stand on immigration policy, every person deserves dignity, due process, and respect under the law.

In this clip, I served on a national panel at the 3rd Annual Heal Collaborative Lung Cancer Summit where I shared the importance of access to care and its importance when it comes to saving lives. This was my fourth time to be invited by NBCSL to participate on a national panel and fifth time overall.
