What happened in Texas last weekend?
A spectacular air show and a poignant farewell to an iconic A-10 Thunderbolt II.

On September 7-8, 2024, the Midland International Airport hosted the 33rd annual "High Sky Wing AIRSHO," showcasing an array of breathtaking aerial performances. This year's event featured legendary aerobatic performers, including Stephen Covington with his "Fury" aircraft, the NextGen Eagles Formation Aerobatic team, and Mike "Spanky" Gallaway dazzling the crowd with his Extra 300SL. Aaron Taylor took to the skies in his Boeing Super Stearman, while several World War II-era aircraft, such as a B-25, a P-40, and multiple T-6s, left attendees in awe.

However, the true highlight of the weekend was the A-10 Thunderbolt II demonstration team, captained by Maj. Lindsey "Mad" Johnson. A particularly memorable moment was the farewell flight of the A-10 with ID 80244, affectionately known as "Black Snake" or "Black Mamba," recognized for its striking black and gray snake design. This unique paint scheme was originally created by the 122nd Fighter Wing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Indiana Air National Guard. Following this event, "The Black Snake" will no longer take to the skies.

This occasion not only marked the end for this beloved aircraft but also signified a broader farewell, as this year represents the final performances for the A-10 Thunderbolt II demonstration team, with only three more shows remaining on their schedule.

On Thursday, August 29, 2024, the personnel of HSC and full time members of the 136th MEB gathered to bid farewell to SFC Jonathan L. " Slinkydog" Andersen and wish him the best in his new assignment. SFC Andersen served as the Readiness Noncommissioned Officer for MEB Headquarters and Service Company, a role that typically involves a wide range of administrative tasks, requiring significant time and dedication. Despite these demands, SFC Andersen consistently met the company's needs while always finding time to assist as many Soldiers as possible with the challenges of military life.

What truly set SFC Andersen apart was his genuine care and passion for supporting the members of the unit, beyond just fulfilling the command's daily orders. His care, friendliness, and professionalism will be deeply missed by all service members at MEB. We are profoundly grateful for the countless Soldiers you helped unconditionally and the many lives you impacted with your leadership.

We don't need to tell you to go and do great things—we know you will, as it’s simply in your nature. Instead, we wish for you to continue finding more lives to change, just as you did with us. Farewell, SFC Andersen—you are a truly great leader.

4th of July. Independence Day!

The American Independence Day is a testament to the enduring spirit of liberty and the relentless pursuit of freedom. In the turmoil of conflict and defiance, a new nation emerged, challenging the might of an empire and redefining the course of history.

In the middle of the battle cries and the clash of arms, ordinary men and women rose to extraordinary heights, fueled by a genuine belief in the inherent rights of mankind. From the hallowed grounds of Bunker Hill to the harsh winter at Valley Forge, the patriots of the revolution endured hardship and adversity with unbreakable resolve.

The principles of independence, self-governance, and individual liberties forged in the harsh fire of revolution continue to resonate in the fabric of American society. The legacy of courage, sacrifice, and unity serves as a guiding light for future generations, reminding us that pursuing freedom is a noble effort worthy of our highest aspirations.

As we reflect on Independence Day, we honor those who dared to defy tyranny, who fought for a vision of a nation conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Their legacy endures as a beacon of hope and inspiration, challenging us to uphold the ideals of democracy, justice, and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Throwback Thursday (8 June 2024)

When we drink coffee, ideas march like the Army. This saying embodies the strong relationship between the military and coffee. In the United States, the bond between the Army and coffee dates back to the days of the Civil War, when soldiers were issued roasted and ground coffee beans as part of their rations. While coffee may not be a standard issue ration today, it is still commonly served during morning "chow.

Since the American Civil War, coffee has undergone significant improvements. From the days of soldiers receiving basic roasted and ground beans, today's coffee experience offers a wide array of high-quality beans, brewing methods, and flavors. The evolution of coffee culture has led to a heightened appreciation for specialty blends, artisanal roasts, and innovative brewing techniques, making coffee a truly diverse and refined beverage that people worldwide enjoy.

On June 8, 2024, the Sumer Moon Coffee (Diamond Oaks) Company from the Round Rock area pleasantly surprised the 136th MEB by generously providing a special brew of coffee for the troops. The gesture was deeply appreciated, offering a moment of respite during the intense annual training of the MEB. The HSC Company Commander Captain Pacheco acknowledged this thoughtful gesture by presenting a certificate of appreciation to the Summer Moon (Diamond Oaks) staff. Your care and dedication to our soldiers are truly valued and appreciated.

During the recent external evaluation, I found myself collaborating closely with the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) in a realm entirely new to me: visual media publications. This venture immersed me in crafting messages through imagery, aimed at uplifting spirits in simulated disaster scenarios across major U.S. cities. The PAO’s goal was to create visual publications that would inspire and boost morale in affected areas.

Delving into this task was close to assembling a puzzle: selecting the perfect photograph, developing a compelling narrative, and devising impactful phrases to convey a message of hope and resilience. It was both fascinating and gratifying to witness our Soldiers and Airmen, my comrades, depicted in images that captured their strong dedication and hard work.

Despite my lack of prior experience in this domain, the response was unexpectedly positive. Many have expressed interest in the "posters" we drafted and produced, some of which were not even showcased during the exercise. In response to public demand, here are the visual products developed by the PAO team for our recent ExEval. Enjoy.

Special thanks to Captain Thomas Desmond, HSC, 136 MEB for playing an incredible role as PAO. Although Public Affairs is not his MOS, he accelerated the pace of learning and exceeded expectations during the assessment day. His professionalism and guidance were without a doubt extraordinary.

The 136th MEB/HRF just completed their annual training. Over the past week, the HRF's goal was to complete its external evaluation, which focused on national emergency management. With meticulous planning, unwavering dedication, and perfect coordination, as we passed the evaluation, we achieved a milestone in our preparedness efforts.

Our joint forces team, comprised of a collaborative of the Air Force and Army, demonstrated exemplary professionalism and competency in handling simulated emergency scenarios throughout the exercise. From initial response to strategic decision-making, each participant showed commendable resilience and adaptability, ensuring our objectives were not only met but exceeded.

The exercise provided a crucial opportunity to test our protocols and procedures under realistic conditions, allowing us to identify strengths and areas for improvement in our emergency response capabilities. The valuable lessons learned will undoubtedly improve our readiness to safeguard lives and mitigate risks effectively.

To all the Service Members who participated in this exercise; Congratulations on successfully completing this military training exercise and external evaluation! your dedication, hard work, and perseverance have paid off, demonstrating your determination and commitment to excellence. As you reflect on this achievement, remember the strengths and skills you have gained along the way. Embrace your success with pride, knowing that you have overcome challenges and emerged victorious. 2024 Father's Day.

Growing up with a military parent can profoundly shape a child's worldview. From a young age, they understand their parents' sacrifices and commitments to serve their country. The experience often instills discipline, resilience, and a deep respect for duty and honor.
We salute all military dads on this special day! Your strength, courage, and dedication are truly inspiring. Thank you for your service, and happy Father's Day!

On June 13, 2024, we had the honor of welcoming a delegation from the military department of Chile. This esteemed group included Colonel Cammas from the Chilean Army, "Banda" Captain Jara from the Chilean Air Force (FACH), and Esteban Backit, who is the representative of the Cabinet of the Minister of Defense. During their visit, the delegation had the chance to observe various training exercises conducted by the HRF and CBRN TF at Desaster City, a cutting-edge emergency management training facility in College Station, Texas. Interestingly, Major General Suelzer, the Texas Adjutant General (TAG), was also present on the grounds, creating an opportune moment for friendly greetings and interactions. During this event, both sides exchanged commemorative coins, symbolizing the enduring military partnership between our two nations.

These are some of the heroes behind the scenes. Those who have the strength, skills, and knowledge to keep the Army moving forward. Thanks to them, we know that no matter what happens, our rolling stock will get home one way or another. This is what differentiates us from many other armies in the world, the dedication and constant time invested in the maintenance, performance, and recovery of our equipment. Thank you, maintenance & support platoon, you are the silent brawn power behind our success.
