My opponent stated that we should use FIT as a system to support the needs of students and the process by which we identify resources in RRISD. FIT stands for families in transition, a specialized program for homeless students. Fantastic program that helps this population of students, not a resource mechanism for every student in RRISD. I've seen comments about splitting the vote and even had others mention to me that voting for the Democrat in a non-partisan race is about strategy. I disagree, background and expertise matter. I applaud my opponents' community efforts; however, we need board members with expertise and lived experiences to support our students. Someone who has done the work of ensuring students are successful and developed policies and procedures, curriculum, and data processes to monitor and improve academic success. Someone who understands education administratively from the local and state level and the levers needed to build a functional governance system. My opponent also stated we should abolish the STAAR test. Before the testing system was put in place marginalized populations suffered the most, especially special education students. No question I am the most qualified and best candidate for this seat. Please share, I am fighting against two machines in this race with clear financial advantages.
