Learning Differently, Together
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and this one is personal for me.
My son William and I both have dyslexia, so we know firsthand what it's like to learn differently. Some things are harder for us, while others come more naturally. We all learn differently, and that's okay.
Learning differently doesn't mean you have to dream differently.
William went to Grayslake North, where he played football and ran track. He became an Eagle Scout, earned his college degree, and kept working toward his dream of becoming a firefighter. Today he's a full-time firefighter/paramedic with the Lake Zurich Fire Department.
Now he wants to give back.
On Saturday, October 17, we're bringing kids and families together at Avon Township for an afternoon of having fun, trying new things, and making new friends.
William will lead fun firefighter-style challenges that include teamwork, problem-solving, and movement. He'll also share some fire safety along the way. This isn't a classroom or a lecture. There are no grades or tests, and nobody has to be the fastest or the best.
Some things might be harder, and other things might come easier. That's okay. The whole idea is to let kids try different things without worrying about whether they're the best at them.
And while Dyslexia Awareness Month inspired this event, kids with all kinds of learning differences are welcome.
Elementary and middle school kids are welcome!
It's also a chance for kids to meet other kids and for parents and families to meet each other too.
Sometimes just knowing you're not the only one can make a difference.
