sounds like a nice visit MTM back when more people openly took pride in their Confederate ancestors service and life.
Mary Tyler Moore’s Confederate ancestor.
Mary Tyler Moore (1936–2017), the iconic star of The Dick Van D**e Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, brought humor and strength to television while building a legendary career. She also deeply cherished her Southern roots in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.
Her great-grandfather, Lt. Col. Lewis Tilghman Moore, served in the Stonewall Brigade as an officer in the 4th Virginia Infantry under General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.
In the winter of 1861–1862, Lt. Col. Moore offered his elegant home at 415 North Braddock Street in Wi******er, Virginia, as Stonewall Jackson’s headquarters. Jackson planned operations there until Confederate forces withdrew in March 1862.
Mary Tyler Moore took great pride in this family connection. She visited Wi******er several times and generously donated funds to restore and preserve the house, now the Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum. Her support helped reproduce the elegant gilt wallpaper that Jackson himself admired.
If you travel through the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, make time to stop by the Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum in Wi******er. It is one of the best and authentic Civil War museums I’ve ever visited—rich with history and personal relics from that era.
Mary Tyler Moore’s efforts to preserve her great-grandfather’s home is a wonderful example of honoring our ancestors. Her support for its preservation is a great example to us all. We must all try to remember and protect the memory of those who came before us. The South’s history is worth cherishing. -RJ
