From the New Mexico Department of Transportation, which is urging motorists to use extreme caution as widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected across southern New Mexico Tuesday (Sept. 22) through Thursday (Sept. 24):

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch from noon Tuesday, Sept. 22, through 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, for much of southern New Mexico. Heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding and heavy runoff, particularly in mountainous areas, burn scar areas, low-lying locations, arroyos, normally dry washes, and areas with poor drainage. Runoff may also affect roadways and highways in and below mountainous terrain.

Storms may develop quickly and produce heavy rainfall, damaging winds and small hail. Motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions, reduced visibility, standing water, debris and possible roadway closures.

“Flash flooding can create dangerous conditions on roadways with little warning,” said Francisco Sanchez, District Two Engineer. “If you come across a flooded roadway, do not take the chance of trying to cross it. Find a safe alternate route and remember that getting there safely is more important than getting there quickly.”

Flash flood and severe-weather driving tips:

> Turn around, don’t drown. Never drive through a flooded roadway or around barricades. Water may be deeper or moving faster than it appears, and the roadway beneath the water may be damaged or washed away.
> Never enter a flooded arroyo or low-water crossing. Arroyos and normally dry washes can fill rapidly, even when rain is falling miles away.
> Obey road closures and barricades. They are placed for your safety. Never move, drive around or ignore a barricade closing a flooded or damaged roadway.
> Slow down and buckle up. Wet pavement increases stopping distance and the risk of hydroplaning. Reduce your speed and always wear your seat belt.
> Increase following distance. Leave additional space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead to allow more time to react and stop.
> Use your headlights. Turn on your headlights during rain and low-visibility conditions so you can see and be seen.
> Do not use cruise control. Maintaining direct control of your speed can help you respond more quickly if your vehicle begins to lose traction.
> Watch for debris and roadway damage. Heavy rain can wash rocks, mud, branches and other debris onto roadways and can undermine pavement.
> Treat dark traffic signals as four-way stops. Storms may cause power outages. Approach intersections cautiously and be prepared for signals that are not operating.
> Avoid unnecessary travel during the heaviest storms. When possible, delay travel until conditions improve.
> Stay informed. Check weather forecasts and road conditions before traveling and never attempt to check a phone or mobile device while driving.

If visibility becomes too poor to safely continue driving, find a safe location completely off the roadway and away from areas prone to flooding. Do not stop in travel lanes, beneath overpasses or in low-lying areas where water may rise quickly. Drivers should never assume a roadway is safe simply because water appears shallow.

Motorists are encouraged to check current road conditions before traveling at NMRoads.com or by calling 511.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Sept. 22, 9 a.m.
This city sandbag site has run out of sand and bags.
----------------
SANDBAGS AVAILABLE AS POTENTIAL HEAVY RAINFALL FORECAST
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch that includes Chaves County for Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 22) through Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 23). The Weather Service has issued this notification due to the potential for excessive rainfall in many parts of New Mexico.

Local residents can find sand and bags outside the City of Roswell Streets Department facility at 320 E. Alameda St. while the supply lasts. People should bring their own shovels to fill the sandbags, and are asked to be considerate of others by taking only a reasonable amount since there is a limited supply.

The latest information and forecasts from the National Weather Service are found at https://www.weather.gov/abq/.

Shawn has served with the Roswell Fire Department since 2016, working his way through the ranks as a Firefighter and Fire Apparatus Operator. Throughout his career, Shawn has demonstrated a strong work ethic, commitment to the fire service, and dedication to continued education and professional development.

We are confident Shawn will make an outstanding Lieutenant. His experience, leadership, and commitment to developing those around him will serve B-Shift and the department well. As a company officer, Shawn will play an important role in mentoring our firefighters, maintaining high operational standards, and ensuring our personnel continue to provide the highest level of service to the citizens of Roswell.

Steeler has served with the Roswell Fire Department since 2014 and has progressed through the ranks as a Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Operator and Lieutenant. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation as an effective instructor and leader who has a unique ability to connect with personnel at every level of the organization.

Steeler brings a strong understanding of the fundamentals of the fire service and the importance of mastering the basic skills upon which advanced operations are built. His ability to teach, motivate and communicate will be an important asset as he leads the Training Division and works to develop both our newest recruits and experienced personnel.

As Division Chief of Training, Steeler will be responsible for helping establish consistent department-wide training standards, strengthening our recruit academy, developing future leaders, and ensuring our personnel remain prepared for the increasingly complex challenges faced by today's fire service.

We look forward to seeing the Training Division continue to grow under his leadership.

The Roswell Police Department invites the public to National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Roswell Recreation and Aquatic Center (1402 W. College Blvd.) from 6 to 8 p.m.

RPD and other law enforcement, fire and medical agencies will have some of their vehicles and equipment at the event for people to check out firsthand while visiting with the emergency responders.

During the event, the outdoor pool will be open to the public for free swimming beginning at 6:15 p.m. There is a limit of 200 people in the pool at a given time.

There will be food, games and raffles.

National Night Out began in 1984 as a way for communities across the country to build relationships among citizens and police, fire and medical emergency responders, while also raising crime-prevention awareness. Thousands of communities in all 50 states and U.S. territories, as well as in Canada, hold local events each year. Most National Night Out events are held on the first Tuesday in August, although some places hold events at other times.

Congratulations, Brittany! Many thanks to you and your team for all you do!

The City of Roswell's Mission Pillar Award recognizes a city employee’s efforts in exhibiting one or more of the city's core values of accountability, communication, excellence, integrity and teamwork. One award winner is selected each month from the nominations received that month.

The honoree for the June Mission Pillar Award is Brittany Shannon, the assistant department manager at Consolidated Dispatch, which is the Pecos Valley Regional Communications Center.

The award nomination submitted for Brittany noted her “dedication to the entire center is shown in how she manages many different things all at once” and excels in all she does even as she handles the responsibilities of several positions during a staffing shortage. “Brittany is very precise in her work and wants to set an example for the team that she is helping to develop and lead,” the nomination says. “Brittany puts the welfare of the (dispatch) center…above her own. Brittany never sees herself as deserving of any awards, only her team.”
