With all the recent heavy rainfall and additional rainfall expected in the coming days, it is important to remember to never drive around barricades and never drive through flood waters. Some water may remain on roadways for a long period of time after the rain has stopped.

Over the last two years we have been in the process of updating our self contained breathing apparatus “SCBA” from the low pressure system to the newer higher pressure system . Thank you to Fire Safety Services for helping with these. we have achieved some of this through state grant funding as well as some out of pocket. We recently received decals form IdentiFire to help mark them as ours as a lot of the neighboring departments have the same SCBA’s. The IdentiFire labels are glow in the dark labels that will help locate them in low light conditions.

This is what’s left behind at the station when a fire call comes in. Work boots from leaving their job. Lounge shoes from leaving their family at home. The people whose shoes are left behind aren’t just firefighters. They are husbands, wives, dads, moms, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors. The people who drop everything when the pager goes off. The people who sacrifice their family time, birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, sleep and many other hours, to be there for complete strangers when they need us most. In the fire service, our number one goal is life safety. That includes our lives too. At the end of the call, these shoes need to be filled again. Help us help you by having and practicing your emergency evacuation plan, slowing down and paying attention when going through accidents scenes, testing your smoke alarms and following fire prevention tips. With your help, we can fill these shoes at the end of every call.

Does your community rely on volunteer firefighters… and do you even know?

Across the country, volunteers are the ones responding when the call comes in. 🚒❤️ This National Volunteer Week, we’re recognizing the impact they make every day.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of retired Lieutenant Ken Lemmon. Ken served with us as firefighter/ EMT for over 20 years, and served as our training officer for most of that time.

We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to our local dispatchers. You are all awesome and do one heck of a great job.

National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week is a time to recognize the calm voices behind the chaos, the professionals who answer the call when everything else feels like it’s falling apart. Observed each year in April, National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week honors the dispatchers who serve as the critical first link in emergency response.
They are the unseen heroes guiding frantic callers through CPR, sending help in seconds, coordinating law enforcement, fire, and EMS, all the while holding steady in moments where every second matters. While first responders are often visible on the front lines, telecommunicators are the steady heartbeat behind the scenes, ensuring those responders get where they’re needed quickly and kept informed throughout.

This week is more than appreciation, it’s acknowledgment of the emotional strength, quick thinking, and unwavering dedication required to do this job. Every call answered is a life touched, a crisis managed, and a community made safer.

To every 911 professional, thank you for being the voice of calm, the lifeline in emergencies, and the unseen force that keeps everything moving forward when it matters most.

Champaign County has the best of the best! As the Director, I am so proud and honored to have a team that is caring, calm, determined, intelligent, professional, and always ready to answer the call. Thank you for being such amazing dispatchers!!

Be weather aware this evening.

[5:26 AM] Showers and storms will develop and move southeast through the area tonight. There is the potential for large hail and damaging winds as well as an isolated tornado. The greatest chance for severe weather will be near and north of Interstate 70. In addition, locally heavy rainfall may occur, which could lead to instances of flooding.

Yesterday at 3:27pm, we were dispatched to an address on State Rt 29 for a residential structure fire with heavy fire conditions. A neighbor observed the fire and called 911. The resident was at work at the time. Engines 161, 162, 163 as well as tankers 161 and 164 and Medic 162 all responded. Our volunteers fought this fire for several hours in freezing weather conditions. A huge thank you to our mutual aid departments, JSP Fire District, West Liberty Fire Department , Quincy-Miami Twp Fire & EMS and Box 13 Urbana for there assistance! All four departments are 100% volunteers, and we appreciate the members who give of their time in service to our communities!
