June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month
At Senior Living Placement Specialists, we spend every day helping families navigate the challenges that come with aging. June is a great reminder that while aging can be one of life's most rewarding chapters, it also takes a community that looks out for and supports our older adults.
Many seniors are living full, active lives—staying connected with family, pursuing hobbies, volunteering, traveling, and continuing to do the things they love. Aging should be about maintaining independence, purpose, dignity, and quality of life.
Unfortunately, not every older adult has the support and protection they deserve.
Elder abuse isn't always obvious. It can show up as financial manipulation, social isolation, missed medical appointments, unexplained changes in behavior, or a loved one suddenly seeming withdrawn, anxious, or fearful. In many cases, it's a gradual loss of control, independence, or confidence that raises concern.
That's why awareness is so important.
As family members, friends, neighbors, and professionals, we all have a role to play. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is simply check in, ask questions, and pay attention when something doesn't feel right.
It's also important to recognize that some older adults face additional challenges when seeking help. Seniors from communities, different cultural backgrounds, or those who face language barriers may experience isolation, stigma, or fear that makes it harder to speak up. Creating safe, welcoming, and supportive environments can make a tremendous difference.
Ways You Can Help
✅ Stay connected. A phone call, text, or visit can go a long way in helping someone feel supported and valued.
✅ Pay attention to changes. Sudden shifts in mood, appearance, finances, or daily routines can be signs that something needs a closer look.
✅ Have conversations. Ask caring, open-ended questions and listen without rushing to judgment.
✅ Know your resources. Understanding where to find support makes it easier to take action when concerns arise.
At Senior Living Placement Specialists, we believe every older adult deserves to age with dignity, respect, safety, and choice. When families and communities stay connected and informed, we help ensure seniors can continue living their best lives with the support they need.
This month—and every month—let's work together to protect, advocate for, and celebrate the older adults who have contributed so much to our communities. ❤️
