Kathryn Schwartz-Eckhardt, Rising Star

Following the election of Donald Trump, Kathryn Schwartz-Eckhardt helped organize the Indivisible North Metro organization for progressives across mid-Anoka County. She led food drives, fundraising for overdue lunch balances and community education sessions. And if that weren’t enough, she also challenged veteran Republican Peggy Scott for the 35B House seat. By all accounts, she ran a smashing campaign and cut Scott’s margin of victory in half. Shoring up her DFL resume for the future, Kathryn is now a SD35 Director and campaign manager for freshman Rep. Zack Stephenson’s re-election. Professionally she is Director of Recruitment and Program Development in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health at the U of M.

Kathryn lives in Andover, Minnesota.

She is also involved in Indivisible as well as a Northfield group working on ID cards for immigrants. She serves on the Northfield Human Rights Commission and is heavily involved in Census work and the Everyone Counts initiative. Adjectives district folks use to describe Angelique include: enthusiastic, amazing and incredible.

Aisha Chughtai, Rising Star

She has organized youth, people of color and indigenous folks, women, immigrants and LGBTQIA + folks, held leadership positions in many local DFL units and inspired countless new people to get involved in the DFL. Aisha has a boundless spirit and is deeply connected to social justice movements, being a regular at housing justice, workers’ rights and immigration actions. Currently she is the vice chair of CD5 and a frequent presence at DFL endorsing conventions fighting for progressive candidates.

Sara Christensen, Rising Star (posthumous)

Described as a long-time DFL volunteer despite her youth, Sara Christensen was a valued field organizer for Al Franken’s campaign, Secretary for CD5 and Bernie Sanders’ Iowa data manager in 2016, going so far as to leave her family in Minnesota so she could work for Sanders in Iowa. Even in the grip of her fight with sarcoma (cancer), Sara planned and executed a successful data and doorknocking campaign for Mandy Meisner’s bid for Anoka County Commissioner, enabling voter turnout operations that helped Mandy to win every precinct as a political newcomer. Sara had such a passion for children that she became an assistant for children with special needs at an elementary school in south Minneapolis and later, a Special Education teacher at Minneapolis North High School.

Sara lived in St. Paul, Minnesota.
