These three- my Uncle Roy, Granddad, and Papa- were foundational to my love of reading. I found comfort on Granddad’s lap as he read out loud whatever book was in his hand (often a Tom Clancy), saw Uncle Roy with his stack of nonfiction and an insatiable curiosity, and Papa, bless him, who was not a reader but was absolutely supportive of my being so and would give me carte blanche at the bookstore no matter what budgetary concerns our family may have been facing. My husband shares these values of recognizing the power of reading and seeking knowledge. To all the men who have a hand in supporting the next generation, I wish a very Happy Father’s Day

It was an honor to be sworn in by Judge John Anderson last night, and so exciting to take part in my first board meeting as a trustee. Our next meeting is July 9 at 7:00, and the public is always welcome!

Can’t please everyone 🤷‍♀️

We got to experience a meet and greet with the amazing Swedish metal band In Flames, and during the Q&A session I asked the band members what they’re reading or what their favorite books are. One of the guitarists (the one standing between my husband and me) loves Carl Sagan, so he’s obviously my new favorite. (I told him as much and he did a nice pirouette in celebration!)

I’ve got a couple Sagans in my personal library, but I think I’ll check out what others are available at our public library or what we can pull from the Swan library system. I love that we can access such a wide range of books, whether they’re right here in Roselle or any other library.

Edited to add: I went from the Rockys to rockstars! 🏔️ 🤘🏻 I’m not always this adventurous, but I am always this corny. Sorry not sorry.

What do you do when you travel? If you’re not scoping out new libraries with your kiddo, you’re doing it wrong!

After touring the US Mint and exploring downtown Denver, my kiddo and I *checked out* the Denver Public Library (get it? Checked out?? I crack myself up). It was excellent, and made me look forward to our new Roselle library even more. The Makers’ Spaces (one geared to kids and another all ages) were great! We made a Pride flag fan out of paper and cardboard scraps, and then crafted earrings, did some paper quilling, and even 3D printed a trilobite. Their setup in the kids’ area had a lot of familiar elements to what’s planned here, so I can guarantee it’ll be great. The bright colors, displays, sound-dampening ceiling, and general flow were wonderful. My kiddo called it a “happy and safe space, that’s super fun!” Did we miss another planned tour at a candy factory because we were exploring the library? Yes. Was it worth it? YES!

Incidentally, if you want to learn more about the plans for our new Roselle Library, come to the Community Input Meeting in the library community room on Monday, May 5 from 6:30-7:30!
