Emergencies rarely happen at convenient times. National Preparedness Month is a good reminder to create a plan that includes the needs of someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia.

Consider keeping these items ready and easy to find:

💜 A current medication list
💜 Emergency contacts and healthcare information
💜 Copies of identification
💜 Basic food, water, and personal-care supplies
💜 A familiar item that may provide comfort
💜 Contact information for a backup caregiver

Make sure family members or others who may need to help know where the information and supplies are kept. Review the plan as care needs change.

For information, resources and caregiver support, call the Alzheimer’s New Jersey® Helpline at 888-280-6055.

Get to know our new Board Chair, Robert (Bob) Goldsmith Esq. 👋

🏙️ As an attorney, his work focuses on redevelopment, land use & zoning at Greenbaum, Rowe Smith & Davis, LLP.

💜 His connection to Alzheimer’s New Jersey® is personal. His father lived with Alzheimer’s disease.

🤝 He joined our Board about a decade ago to honor his father and help other families find the resources his own family did not have.

We are glad to have Bob helping lead the work ahead.

An Alzheimer’s diagnosis changes lives. It does not erase a person’s identity, accomplishments, relationships or voice.

When we talk about Alzheimer’s disease, it matters that we continue to see the person first. 💜

A recent Alzheimer’s New Jersey® blog reflects on veteran television journalist Bill Ritter’s announcement that he has been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease and is stepping away from his longtime role at WABC.

Behind every diagnosis is a person navigating change while continuing to be shaped by a lifetime of experiences, relationships and contributions.

An adult day program may provide structured activities and social connection for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia while giving caregivers time for other responsibilities.

Programs can vary, so it is important to ask questions before choosing one.

Consider asking:

💜 What are the hours and days of operation?
💜 Is transportation available?
💜 What is the cost, and is financial assistance available?
💜 What is the staff-to-participant ratio?
💜 What dementia training and experience does the staff have?
💜 What safety procedures are in place?

Schedule a tour and ask whether a trial visit is available so you and your loved one can experience the environment before making a decision.

Sometimes an outing becomes difficult, and explaining what is happening in front of your loved one may add to the stress of the moment.

Alzheimer’s New Jersey® Please Be Patient Cards can be handed discreetly to someone who may need to know that your companion has Alzheimer’s disease.

Caregivers may find them helpful at:

💜 Restaurants
💜 Hair salons or barbershops
💜 Medical offices
💜 Family gatherings
💜 Taxis or rideshare services

The cards can help educate others while protecting the dignity and independence of the person living with Alzheimer’s disease.

A support group is not a place where you need to have the perfect words or all the answers.

It is a place to share what caregiving has been like, hear from people who understand and learn about resources that may help. 💜

Alzheimer’s New Jersey® Family Support Groups are free and open to the community. Both virtual and in-person groups are available, including groups created around different caregiving situations.

FREE to attend, but registration is required.

Learn more or complete the inquiry form at https://www.alznj.org/services/family-support-groups/
