Hello Honey Friends –
And that is exactly how we feel about you, our very loyal customers, as friends that we’ve made over the years, providing wonderful local honey, laughter, and education on all things bees and honey. We’ve sampled varietals together, Blueberry, Blackberry, Wildflower, Starthistle, Pumpkin, Cranberry and a delightful, unexpected mix of Blackberry/Cranberry, just to name our most sought-after varietals.
We’ve shared so many happy times interacting with you, so it is with mixed feelings that we announce that we are changing our focus to coaching and consulting and are retiring from coming to the Umpqua Valley Farmers' Market
Dallas has been doing bees since he was a teenager (and he happily shows a picture to all, showing him in a bee yard at age 14 – you know, you’ve seen that picture). Beekeeping is a part of his very being, so we aren’t getting out of the bee business entirely but moving away from producing large volumes of local honey and providing pollination services, to a new phase of sharing our knowledge and encouraging new beekeepers to learn about and be successful in keeping bees. It has been vitally important to us to provide genuine local, raw honey in its purest form – you deserve honesty and a quality product – one of our core values as beekeepers.
There comes a time for all of us to evaluate that we are getting, ahem, older (why is that so hard to say?) and to decide when it’s the best time to make changes. This is a decision that we’ve struggled with – when should we slow down a bit?
It requires long hours to keep bees on a large scale, moving bees at night and meeting the sunrise on the way home, with our old, dented Stanley thermos of coffee by our side, then working bees during the day, and extracting, bottling, and labeling honey in the evening.
While we are sad to leave the market and all of you, we are looking forward to being a coach, mentor, and consultant to people interested in adding beehives to their backyards, farms, homesteads.
With that, we bid you a sweet farewell, and wish you all the best. You can still find us on our page of Kalapuya Honey
