They are also advocates for abused and neglected children in a larger, collective sense. CASA volunteers educate the public regarding the scope of their community's child abuse problem. CASA volunteers can advocate with the private sector for financial, human and other resources to assist in solving the difficult problems confronting children. They can advocate for responsible change with the child welfare and human service systems. The accomplishment of CASA of Douglas County's mission is dependent on the efforts and commitments of volunteers.

When a child cannot safely remain with their parents, being cared for by a grandparent, aunt, uncle, adult sibling, extended family member, or another person with a meaningful connection to the child can help preserve something incredibly important: connection.

Connection to family.
Connection to community.
Connection to culture, school, traditions, and the people who already know and love them.

At CASA of Douglas County, our advocates recognize the importance of those relationships and work to understand the people and connections that matter in a child's life.

This month, we celebrate the grandparents, relatives, extended family members, and other kin who step forward for children when they are needed most.

For a child experiencing foster care, a lot can change.

A new home.
A new school.
A new caseworker.
New adults. New routines. New expectations.

Through those changes, a CASA volunteer can remain one consistent person who knows the child, knows their story, and continues to show up.

CASAs aren't there for just one hearing or one moment in a case. They are appointed to advocate for a child throughout their time in the dependency system.

CASA advocacy starts with getting to know the child.

Our volunteers spend time with the children they serve, listen to them, learn what is happening in their lives, and stay connected as their cases move forward.

That relationship gives CASAs a unique ability to bring current information to the court—not just about what is happening in the case, but about how the child is actually doing.

That's the power of having a consistent advocate by a child's side.

You need to be willing to listen.

And most importantly, to keep showing up.

It takes a community to support a child and strengthen a family. ❤️

CASA volunteers are one part of a much larger team of people working toward the same goal: helping children be safe, supported, and connected to the people they love.

Every day, CASAs work alongside families, foster and relative caregivers, ODHS caseworkers, attorneys, service providers, schools, behavioral health professionals, the courts, and many other community partners.

Whenever safely possible, the goal is for children to remain with or return to their families—and for families to have the resources, knowledge, connections, and support they need to succeed long after a case closes.

No one person or organization can do that alone.

Together, we help build stronger families and brighter futures for children in our community.

What does a CASA volunteer bring to a child’s case that may be different from everyone else involved?

According to Oregon judges, one of CASA’s greatest strengths is bringing a unique perspective of the child’s needs.

That perspective is built over time.

CASA volunteers get to know the child, follow what is happening throughout the case, talk with the people involved in the child’s life, ask questions, and advocate for what is in that individual child’s best interest.

In fact, when judges were asked about the greatest strengths of their local CASA programs, understanding the child’s unique needs and best-interest advocacy rose to the very top.

That’s what having a dedicated advocate can bring to a complicated case: someone whose focus keeps coming back to the child.

What does "showing up consistently" really mean?

Children involved in the child welfare system often experience change after change. Foster placements may change. Caseworkers may change. Therapists, teachers, and service providers may change.

A CASA volunteer is different.

Whenever possible, the same CASA volunteer remains a consistent presence throughout the child's case, building trust one visit at a time. Because they know the child, not just the case file, they're often the first to notice when something has changed, whether it's a new success, a growing concern, or a need that isn't being met.

That's why judges ranked spending regular time with children as the most important responsibility of a CASA volunteer. Those consistent relationships help ensure every child is truly seen, heard, and advocated for.

Learning is better together.

Our CASA volunteers are committed to lifelong learning because every child deserves an advocate who is prepared, informed, and ready to make a difference.

This week, we gathered for a statewide training hosted by Oregon CASA Network, where volunteers from across Oregon came together to strengthen their advocacy skills. Around here, we believe good training is even better with coffee, snacks, and great conversation. After the training, our team spent time discussing what we learned and how we can continue providing the best possible advocacy for children in Douglas County.
