Here is the location of a hotel on Railroad St as shown by the Sanborn Fire Maps done in 1922. This would be about the location of the old Roseboro Community building.

I was looking through some old newspapers online last night and came across an article about a fire in Roseboro, so it caught my attention. What surprised me was I had not ever heard of the man that owned the house that burned, John Wright "J. W." Underwood. I recognized all the other names in the article that had homes near his but not him. So I started doing some research and found out alot about him, but I am curious, where was his house? I have found out that he was one of the men that donated land in the future town of Roseboro for the railroad to come through, and he married a local Culbreth woman, having 10 children. His house burned in December, 1910 and a new one was built in the same location in 1911. It also appears that he owned a hotel with 15 rooms on "Railroad St." When he died in 1928, he was living 2 miles east of Roseboro but actually died in his original house that his son was living in and he was buried in the Roseboro Cemetery.

Some of his children were:
Timothy Lucian "TL" Underwood of Roseboro
William James "WJ" Underwood
Mary Elizabeth Underwood m. Thomas Edmond Owen
Fleet Martin Underwood of Elizabethtown
Thomas Arthur "TA" Underwood of Roseboro
Annie Laurie Underwood
Henry Waller Underwood
John Lucian "JL" Underwood of Roseboro

These are the ones I have access to right now without digging deeper, so does anyone recognize the three men of Roseboro and where they might have lived? I will share some more information when I can organize it better. I have shared a picture of him and his wife.

I was speaking to the mayor about the mysterious Dr William L. Payne and I was under the impression that he died in the old hotel, where Mr. Phillip Williams lives now, however, I found this article that says he died in J. Abner Barkers home which stood where Butler Funeral Home is today. If you are interested in Dr. Payne, there is a picture of him and some of his story in a previous post a while back.
