Are you a family member or friend of a Michigan Civilian Conservation Corps enrollee? Are you really interested in CCC history? We are considering bringing back the Higgins Lake CCC Reunion! This event will differ from the original but will continue the legacy and spirit of the original reunions. Would you be willing to pay a registration fee that would include food and entertainment and for lodging in the Higgins Lake area? We are conducting this informal survey to gauge interest and to see if such an event is feasible. Comment here if you’d be interested in attending! Please include how many people you’d bring, how much you’d be willing to pay for registration (a general range is fine), how long should the event last (Friday night-Sunday morning, just Saturday, etc.), what types of speakers, tours, or entertainment you’d like to see, and anything else you’d like to add. Feel free to directly email the CCC Museum Historian, Hillary Pine, at [email protected].

We are helping out a Michigan CCC researcher who is trying to find a co-author.

A researcher who has done a lot of work on Camp Temple is looking for a co-author to write an article for Michigan History Magazine. This article idea has already been accepted by the editorial committee. Since the article is about Camp Temple, an African American segregated camp, this researcher feels it's not his story to tell. As the State's steward for our CCC history, we could co-write this, but we agree that someone who is African American would be a much better fit to tell this story. Please reach out if you or someone you know could help with this. [email protected]

Photo below is a portion of a letter sent by the Camp Temple enrollees to President FDR seeking help due to a racist camp officer and poor camp conditions.

Join us on November 5th to explore the site of the 1930s CCC Camp Higgins Lake. Located about 5 miles north of the Nursery and Museum, the camp was once home to hundreds of men enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps. We'll learn a bit about forest forensics and the CCC, then we'll use maps of the original building layout to find remnants of the camp in the now forested landscape. Free! Please register in advance: https://bit.ly/FF_Fall2022
