There will be a large gradient in high temperatures today across the area owing to clouds and showers across northern Illinois. We're still optimistic in some clearing this afternoon north of I-88, but it's possible we're still too warm near the Wisconsin state line.

Meanwhile, clear to the US-24 corridor, the combination of heat and humidity may make it feel closer to 100 degrees this afternoon! Additional showers and storms are favored south of I-80 by early evening.

Expect periods of rain from showers and embedded thunderstorms this morning, with the highest coverage near and north of I-80 as depicted on the inset map. If you hear thunder, go indoors or into a hard metal topped vehicle. Use caution when driving in heavy rainfall.

[4:19 AM CDT Tuesday 9/15/2026]

Showers and embedded thunderstorms this morning near and north of I-80 should wane in coverage by the mid to late morning. A cold front will move through the area later today through this evening, with scattered thunderstorms near the front (a few potentially strong to severe storms near and south of I-80).

The front will then meander over the region through the end of the week. Expect continued occasional rounds of showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall and an associated threat for localized flooding, especially for areas near and south of I-80.

It's the first fall-like morning of the month out there with temperatures outside of Chicago ranging from the mid 40s to lower 50s! Rockford has been as low as 46°. The patchy ground fog induced by the cool temperatures and causing very localized visibility reductions should dissipate within the next hour or two. 🍂

The weather pattern this week will be more unsettled than it has been the past several days. A cold front approaching late tonight will move through part of the area on Tuesday. The front will then meander over the region through the midweek period, accompanied by occasional rounds of showers and some thunderstorms, some of which may be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall.

The cooler temperatures will continue into tomorrow. There will also be a lower-end chance for showers across portions of interior northern Illinois, though most areas will stay dry through the daytime. A pattern change will usher in summerlike humidity on Tuesday, along with periods of showers and thunderstorms into Wednesday. A few storms on Tuesday and Wednesday may be strong to severe, and there will also be a threat for locally heavy rainfall.
