Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT) is a mandated training set forth and required by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). All correctional officers must be Peace Officer certified. This basic training helps correctional officers better prepare themselves to perform and accomplish the mission of protecting the public, victims of crime, and agency staff. BCOT is the largest basic law enforcement training program in the state of Georgia.

Floyd County Approves Data Center Ordinance

At their Tuesday, August 25 meeting, The Floyd County Board of Commissioners approved new rules for future data centers in unincorporated Floyd County.

The ordinance sets clear requirements for developers, with a focus on utilities, water use, noise, environmental impacts, emergency preparedness, neighborhood compatibility and cleanup.

Floyd County EMA upgrades emergency response with new drone, thanks to Georgia Power

Georgia Power’s $11,000 sponsorship has given Floyd County Emergency Management Agency a major boost in disaster response. The new weather-rated drone features a thermal camera, obstacle avoidance, laser rangefinder, and hot-swappable batteries.

It has already supported missing-person searches, damage assessments, crash investigations, and fire operations—helping responders work faster and safer.

“Many of the counties that surround us are already using drones for search and rescue, and thanks to the generosity of Georgia Power we are now better able to help our community,” said Chris Fincher, EMA Deputy Director.

Celebrating a Major Professional Achievement! ✈️

Congratulations to John D. Carroll, A.A.E., Airport Manager at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport, on being awarded the distinction of Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) designation from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE)!

John successfully completed all three rigorous phases of the accreditation process, demonstrating his expertise in airport management, business administration, and transportation economics.

This accomplishment places John among an elite group of airport professionals. In fact, fewer than 6% of AAAE members nationwide are active Accredited Airport Executives.

The Floyd County Election Office was excited to host participants from the Open Path Center, a program for adults over the age of 21 with intellectual and developmental disabilities, for a full mock election today!

Participants showed up eager to learn about the election process. They served as both “voters” and “poll workers,” experiencing both sides of the election in a fun, hands-on way. County employees from various departments volunteered their time to ensure participants had a steady flow of “voters” throughout the mock election.

“The best part of elections is helping people understand the process and feel more confident about participating,” said Election Supervisor Akyn Beck. “Being able to connect with our community, answer questions, and show people what happens behind the scenes is incredibly meaningful. Days like today remind me why I love what I do.”

A special thank you to Akyn and staff for all you do to ensure that our community has the knowledge, confidence, and opportunity to participate in the election process. We’re grateful for the opportunity to welcome the Open Path Center and make learning about elections fun, engaging, and accessible for everyone!

At last night's Board meeting, Floyd County Commissioners recognized Linda Patty of the Rome-Floyd Fire Department for being selected by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a 2026 NFPA Rising Star. The recognition honors fire and life safety educators who have effectively implemented fire safety programs and initiatives in their communities. Linda is one of only 10 recipients in the U.S. selected for this year’s recognition.

Commissioners also recognized members of the Floyd County Board of Equalization for their dedicated service to the community.

The Board of Equalization plays an important role in providing impartial review of property assessment appeals and helping ensure fairness, transparency, and public confidence in the property tax process.

The Floyd County Board of Commissioners plans to lower the county property tax rate from 9.50 mills in 2025 to 9.45 mills in 2026 and will vote on the proposal during a called meeting on August 18. Commissioners will also consider raising the fire services tax rate from 1.65 to 1.875 mills to help fund firefighter pay raises and a new fire station, while the solid waste tax rate would increase only slightly from 0.656 to 0.657 mills.

Give your pup one last pool day before the season ends! Join Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation on Monday, September 7 for an evening of swimming, music, and dog-friendly vendors.

Swim Times by Size:
▪ Small dogs (15 lbs & under): 5:30 - 6:00 PM
▪ Medium dogs (16–50 lbs): 6:00 - 6:30 PM
▪ Large dogs (50+ lbs): 6:30 - 7:00 PM

Pre-registration is required (limited space). Dogs must be current on vaccinations, friendly with other dogs, and owners must provide vaccination records and a signed waiver.

Keep dogs leashed when they're not in the pool, and be ready for a fun evening with fellow pet lovers!
