The Downtown Development Authority was proud to host its largest First Friday event (held on Saturday) and our first downtown block party in more than 10 years. The event was a tremendous success, bringing residents, visitors, and businesses together to celebrate everything downtown Rome has to offer.

We have since received concerns regarding a member of the Rome Shrine Club’s fundraising activities during the event. The Shriners have a long history of providing invaluable service to children and families in need, and we deeply appreciate their positive impact on our community.

During the event, several concertgoers reported active solicitation to event staff. In response, staff requested assistance from the Rome Police Department. An officer spoke with the individual involved and advised him that solicitation was not permitted without prior authorization under existing City ordinances and event policies. He was not removed from the event or asked to leave; he was simply asked to stop soliciting donations.

Section 11-311 of the City of Rome, GA Code of Ordinances prohibits solicitation on city streets without proper authorization and permitting. While some attendees were disappointed, City staff and law enforcement are required to enforce ordinances and event policies consistently and fairly.

We also want to be clear that downtown merchants had no role in this matter and no authority over City ordinances or enforcement. The Downtown Development Authority is made up of downtown merchants, property owners, and residents who volunteer their time to help make downtown vibrant, welcoming, and a strong community destination. They work hard every day to make downtown Rome a great place to visit, shop, and gather and deserve our support for the role they play in strengthening our community.

The DDA has always welcomed nonprofit participation at our two signature festivals, RoFlo Fest in the spring and Fiddlin’ Fest in the fall. If your organization would like to participate, sign-ups open each season on the DDA website or by contacting the DDA office.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success.
