A Note About Arrests and Our Media Log

We have seen several questions and comments regarding why the names of some individuals arrested by the Rolla Police Department appear in our media log, while the names of others do not. We understand the questions and appreciate the community’s feedback. We wanted to take a moment to explain the difference.

Generally, arrests fall into two categories:

Arrested and Released on Summons:
When an individual is arrested and released on a summons, the court process has begun. The individual is being formally directed to appear in court to address the alleged offense. In these circumstances, the individual’s name will generally be included in our media log.

Arrested and Held for 24-Hour Prosecutorial Review:
In other circumstances, an individual may be arrested and held while officers complete the necessary paperwork and submit the case to the prosecutor for review. Under Missouri law, the prosecutor has a limited period of time to determine whether formal charges will be filed.

A person may ultimately be released without charges being filed for a variety of reasons. Because no formal criminal charge may exist at that point, we do not generally publish the individual’s name in our media log in these circumstances.

In short, when a person is arrested and released on a summons, formal court proceedings have been initiated. When a person is arrested and held for prosecutorial review, formal charges may or may not ultimately be filed.

The Rolla Police Department also operates under Missouri’s Sunshine Law and is committed to providing public information in accordance with Missouri law while respecting applicable privacy, investigative, and legal considerations. Our media log is intended to provide transparency about police activity while recognizing that an arrest is not, by itself, a finding of guilt.

We understand that these distinctions can sometimes be confusing, and we appreciate the questions and feedback we receive from our community. Our goal is to be as transparent, consistent, and informative as possible while ensuring that information we release is accurate and appropriate under Missouri law.

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of the Rolla Police Department.
