CEI had such fun educating folks eager to learn about the benefits of native plants instead of lawns last spring at the campus nature corridor. That event was part of the Eco-Wise Workshop series through City of Cotati and City of Rohnert Park. Check out their next event on 9/12, "Earth, Wind, and Fire . . . and Water! Natural Disaster Preparation + Water Conservation and Stormwater Protection" with Sonoma County Fire District

Curious about this week's WLW post? We SHELL tell you!🐢

You may have seen some turtles in and around SSU's North Pond, also known as the Duck Pond. Those are Red-eared sliders.

Red-eared sliders aren't native to Sonoma County. They are actually invasive and push out western pond turtles, which are native to our region. Because red-eared sliders are larger, more aggressive (for food and basking sites), and breed faster, they outcompete our beneficial native turtles.🚨

However, red-eared sliders aren't all bad. When in their own native habitat, around the Mississippi River Watershed, they serve as both a food source for predators and control aquatic populations through their omnivorous feeding.

Fun fact: we actually have western pond turtles at our Fairfield Osborn Preserve; come check them out!🏞️

Shoutout to bellegrace394 (iNaturalist) for the photo!

We are otter-ly excited to share this week's WLW with you all!🦦

The spotlight is on the North American River Otter found along the Copeland Creek Corridor on the Sonoma State campus!

River otters prefer natural habitats with unpolluted water and minimal human disturbance. They are known for living in riparian zones, typically alongside streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshes.🏞️ Adult river otters can weigh between 10 and 33 pounds and be 2.5 to 5 feet long!

Did you know that when river otters feel frightened, they utter a scream that can be heard up to 1.5 miles across the water? Isn't that fascinating?!😱
