On today's episode of Going Crazy With Wild at Heart-
Dr. Joni at Rocky Point Animal Hospital saves the day! This adult Bald Eagle 🦅 was hit by a car yesterday. He was degloved and his keel bone was exposed. Without Dr. Joni's quick intervention, his bone would have died and he would not have survived. Now, he has a chance to heal and hopefully we can get him home soon. Cape Fear Raptor Center has had the pleasure of serving Coastal North Carolina’s citizens in the education of raptors and their ecosystem since 2012. The effects of COVID 19 were drastically felt by Cape Fear Raptor Center’s all-volunteer run organization, with significant decreases in both volunteer numbers and donations. Because of this and the ability of other organizations in southeastern North Carolina to provide this educational service, the raptor ambassadors permitted by Cape Fear Raptor Center will be transferred to other area raptor educators holding permits with USFWS.
Cape Fear Raptor Center’s Rehabilitation Department will continue to help injured raptors in the area through surgical and medical support of other USFWS permitted raptor rehabilitators throughout the East. Dr. Joni Shimp continues to provide services for Cape Fear Raptor Center’s Rehabilitation Department through Rocky Point Animal Hospital’s facility.

Our freezers are once again running low on game meat. If anyone has some extra deer or boar meat our birds would be grateful! You can drop it off on Wednesday's at the Rocky Point Animal Hospital between 9am-5pm. We can't accept any bird meat at this time due to Avian Flu.

Sunday, October 30th from 1 - 5pm.

Wear your Halloween costume and come spend some time with the birds. Some of the animals will be dressed up as well! And there's more than just birds to socialize with! Friendly Donkeys are joining the party too in their Halloween outfits, and Piggies waiting for belly rubs. Bring the kids and enjoy some outdoor time with wonderful animals.

Swallow-tailed kites (Elanoides forticatus)are back in Willard, NC for the second year. These amazing raptors hunt “on the wing”, catching and eating prey while they fly. They rarely eat prey while perched. They return to the deep south (FL, VA coast to MS coast) and Central America to breed but migrate every year to mid-South America. They maneuver like little fighter jets! Keep an eye out for them in the local area!

Dr. Joni performed a complicated surgery on this Bald Eagle Friday night. He had ingested a hook and swivel and his only chance was surgery. If you would like to help this eagle's recovery you can check out his fundraiser and the rest of his story here:
