Please help us to congratulate our newest graduate, Carmen P.! She started her GED journey in Rocky Mount two years ago. Carmen had moved to the area to be closer to family and she was also working in a job she loved. She wanted to be able to get advanced training in that field. In order qualify for the job training program she needed to have her high school equivalency.

At first she was nervous about studying for the GED, but her passion for her job led her to try. Carmen attended GED Skills classes at the Franklin Center with Teacher Lisa. She was a dedicated student who put in the time and effort necessary to increase and strengthen her reading and math skills. It was not easy. Balancing her job schedule, family life, and class times was difficult. Carmen was surprised to meet so many different people from different places in the GED classes. She made new friends who motivated her and who she also encouraged with GED test preparation.

In addition, she studied at home using the Scoreboost GED study books and the Steck-Vaughn GED Subject books. Plus, Carmen used the online learning programs such as the IXL app on her phone and the GED Academy website on her laptop outside of class. Carmen also participated in the ZOOM Night Math Tutoring when time allowed.

She took two of her official GED subject tests- Science and Social Studies- at the Franklin Center in Rocky Mount via the Online Proctor Test Option. Carmen decided to take her last two subject tests- Math and RLA/Reading Language Arts- at the GED Test Center at the Roanoke Higher Education Center in Roanoke. At the Roanoke site she had access to a physical calculator, a GED math formula sheet, and plastic scratch paper during her Official GED subject tests. She passed her final subject test on Saturday!

Carmen came back to the Franklin Center on Monday to pick up her cap and gown in preparation for the upcoming GED Graduation Ceremony scheduled for June 30th. Carmen will soon start the job training program in the mortuary science -funeral services field. We are proud of you, Carmen! 👩‍🎓 🎉

¡Estamos orgullosos de ti, Ethan! 👨‍🎓

Please help us to congratulate Ethan G., our newest official GED graduate! He started preparing for his GED in July via the Distance Learning option. He studied at home using the Scoreboost GED Preparation books as well as the Steck-Vaughn GED Subject preparation books and stayed in contact with his teacher. He said he liked the flexibility of the Distance Learning option as he could study around his work and family schedule. Ethan took his first three subject tests via the GED Proctored Test Option at the Franklin Center.

Ethan’s goal was to complete his GED so he could enter a training program for a job he had dreamed of doing. It was for a job where he could help his community. He passed three of the four official GED subject tests last fall, but then life got hectic. His last GED subject was math. Ethan was good at math and ready to pass the last subject and complete his official GED certificate. Sometimes life gets in the way for GED Students and it did for Ethan. He was concerned that he would not be able to start the training program. Yet he did not give up!

Last Friday Ethan took the math subject test at the Franklin Center and passed it and completed his Official GED Certificate! He is currently enrolled in a training program to become a firefighter ! 🔥 👨‍🚒

We are proud of you, Ethan! 👨‍🎓

Please help us to congratulate Matthew J., our newest GED graduate!🧑‍🎓 Matthew started his GED journey several years ago. He came to daytime classes with Teacher Lisa and also studied at home with GED Academy online program and also with Steck Vaughn GED books. He made steady progress.

Matthew had completed two of the four official GED subject tests before life got in the way. He moved out of state but stayed in touch with his teacher. He then completed the third official GED subject test! He had only Math to complete to earn his GED.

Life changed again and he returned to Virginia. He had an interesting job and wanted to pursue more training to expand his career in the medical field but he needed to complete his GED in order to do so. He returned to the FCACE program with his newlywed wife to see Teacher Lisa and the rest of the caring staff members at the FCACE. Matthew wasn’t sure how he could make time to improve his math skills. He studied when he could but then when their first baby was born life got even busier. He tried to work on his GED goal, but he had to take care of his family’s needs first. So time slipped away.

Matthew had a day off in December 2025 and contacted the FCACE to see if he could come to class and if possible take a GEDReady practice math test. He made an appointment and came and took a GEDReady math test and passed! By passing he also earned the waiver to be able to take the official GED math test for free!! He was ready to take the official GED MATH subject test and earn his GED certificate!! Yet life got in the way again. His wife was expecting a new baby in a few weeks. How was Matthew going to complete his goal? Several months went by and the staff at the FCACE reached out to Matthew multiple times through various methods with no success. The staff had heard that the family had moved.

On Monday this week Matthew called the FCACE to find out if his GEDReady Math score from December was still valid and if he was still eligible to take the official test for free. It was and he was still eligible! He asked for help to register for the official GED Math subject test. The FCACE staff helped Matthew to make a test appointment for the next morning at the Patrick & Henry Community College test center. At the test center Matthew was able to use a physical calculator, a copy of the GED Math Formulas sheet, and plastic scratch paper. Matthew was nervous about the math test but he was also confident that he could pass it.

Matthew passed the Math test and now has completed his official GED certificate!! He said he was thankful that the FCACE staff kept encouraging him all this time to not give up on his goal and his dreams.

Since Tuesday, Matthew has successfully applied to and has been accepted at Patrick & Henry Community College where he is enrolled to study for a career in the medical field. He is excited to start college classes soon.

Matthew, we are proud of you! 🎉 🙌🤩 👨‍🎓
