The city began to provide public utilities in 1899 with the initial establishment of the water system, which was followed by the wastewater system. In 1902, electric power was added to services provided by Rocky Mount Public Utilities (RMPU),

and a few years later Rocky Mount became the first city in North Carolina to operate its own gas system. Rocky Mount currently operates a public utilities system with over 31,000 households in Nash and Edgecombe counties receiving electricity, natural gas, water, wastewater (sewer), refuse, recycling and/or stormwater services. RMPU services are provided by the following departments: Energy Resources, Finance (Customer Service) and Public Works and Water Resources.

Energy Resources has responded to a natural gas incident in the area of the 800 block of Eastern Ave., where a gas line was struck earlier today.

Energy Resources crews and the City of Rocky Mount Fire Department are on scene. The damaged gas line has been shut off, and there is no threat to the community at this time.

Currently, one customer is without natural gas service while crews work to safely restore service.

Please use caution in the area while crews complete their work.

DIRECTOR'S UPDATE

To provide additional information to our customers and community, Rocky Mount Energy Resources is sharing updated information about the electric and natural gas customers we serve both inside and outside the city limits. We have received numerous requests for this data, and the graphic reflects our active residential, commercial, and industrial accounts as of May 7, 2026.

How are service areas defined?
North Carolina law establishes defined service territories for electric utilities, with specific statutes determining which providers may serve particular areas. In some cases, certain locations are designated as customer-choice areas. While our electric system operates within these legally defined boundaries, natural gas systems are not subject to the same territorial restrictions. This allows us to install natural gas facilities where there is a demonstrated need supported by a sound business model. As a result, we are able to offer competitive pricing and greater flexibility for natural gas customers while continuing to provide safe and reliable service.

How may this impact operations?
Operationally, we plan and staff our teams to ensure rapid emergency response across every corner of our system. Through strategic zoning of employee coverage areas, we are able to respond quickly to customer needs at all times, including after-hours events. We closely track and measure our response times, and we are proud to consistently exceed industry standards for both of our utilities.

We value the opportunity to serve every customer in our service territory, and our team remains committed to reliable, affordable energy and consistent response times throughout our coverage area.

Happy Arbor Day! 🌳

Today, the City of Rocky Mount and the Tree Advisory Board came together at Farmington Park to celebrate.

In recognition of this year’s observance, a Gilded Hearts Redbud was planted in memory of Councilman W. B. Bullock, honoring his dedicated service to the Rocky Mount City Council, where he represented Ward 6 from 2002 until his retirement in 2022.

A proud veteran and committed public servant, W.B. Bullock made lasting contributions to the community. Among his many accomplishments, he served as chair of the committee that led the creation of the Rocky Mount Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park, which was dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 2007. His leadership and dedication continue to have a meaningful impact on the city. A special thank you to the private donors who made this memorial possible.

Arbor Day holds special meaning for Rocky Mount. The city has proudly been recognized as a Tree City USA community for 23 years and has also earned recent designation as a Tree Line USA City. These honors reflect a continued commitment to strengthening the community and caring for its urban forest.
