Special Weather Operations Statement:

The "white (cold weather) flag" alert has been issued for our area. Our Community Shelter, near the Imperial Center and on McDonald Street, will observe the cold weather flag beginning this evening and will remain in effect until the temperature goes above freezing. You can reach the Community Shelter at 252-985-1650.

The "white (cold weather) flag" alert indicates that the shelter is open for anyone seeking to get out of the cold and weather. Cots and linens are in supply and meals will be served to everyone.

Our Bassett Center for families has issued passes to the families who have friends and family nearby and would like to go and stay with them during the in-climate weather event. The Bassett Center will remain open for the remaining families.

Last January a Point in Time count was taken for Nash and Edgecombe counties representing the number of homeless persons. The total was 115. I am not sure what this number reveals to you but the estimate is that, when a count like this is taken, on one day of the year, it represents a small minority of the actual number of homeless persons, the ones that will admit that they are homeless. How many more exist in just these two counties? I don't want to argue the exact number, but I do want to appeal for awareness.

In 2017, let's resolve to be aware. Aware that there are a significant number of homeless persons in our communities. Let's resolve to remember them, care for them as we can, and pray for each other along the way.

From the staff, volunteers, board, supporters and clients of United Community Ministries, Happy New Year and blessings and hope for a bright 2017.

Just after Christmas is a tough time for many who are on the verge of being homeless. Remember that as the New Year will bring new opportunities and hope and dreams that there are those whose dreams and hopes and opportunities are at risk and some may be facing hunger and homelessness. Pray without ceasing for each other.

Thank you to Cummins for the donated turkeys. We were able to distribute turkeys to community, residents, clients and staff! What an amazing gang of blessings! (Gang is a group of turkeys!)

Our shelter manager, Defonda McQueen, and food manager, Rita Leonard, joined the Englewood Assembly of God church for breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Rocky Mount. The church pastor, Gary Blood, treated Defonda and Rita to breakfast and then presented them with a full truck load of goods for the shelters on behalf of the church. Over 50 church members gathered for this event and presented the sleigh full of goods including towels, pillows, food, office supplies, clothes and paper products. Thank you Englewood Assembly of God!
