Can’t stop fighting now!

My Inspiration to Relay….Great-Great Granny Walston, Great-Granny Lewis, Granny Carrie, Uncle Elton, Uncle Royce, Aunt Peggy, Aunt Barbara, Jennifer, Pat, Becky, Tammy….these names may not sound familiar to you but they have one thing in common with our Relay For Life families; they are just a few of my loved ones who lost their fight to cancer. As a teen-ager, I learned that cancer had taken the lives of many of my mother’s family members for over three generations. In 1995 my “Granny Carrie” was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was devastating to hear the diagnosis, sit with her during treatments, see the pain she experienced and the fear in her eyes. She lost her fight in the Spring of that year. I was devastated and knew I needed to become engaged to defeat cancer. In 1996, I heard a Relay for Life announcement on WRMT Radio and called to find how I could get involved. The first event was so inspiring, everyone was compassionate and we all worked towards one common goal: Save lives, help those going through cancer journeys and fight back!! There has been a lot of progress made since that time. I’ve met some of the most wonderful, strongest and fearless people during this journey. Fast forwarding Twenty-two years later, I have transitioned from being a volunteer, team member, etc., to now being a cancer survivor. One of my favorite quotes is: “Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas!” by Dale Rogers. Each person involved in Nash County’s Relay for Life has given me many “days of Christmas”. My inspiration to relay each year is to pass these gifts on to each person who has had cancer and won; remember those who lost their fight to cancer and the families they leave behind; support those who face imminent uncertainty and lastly strive to empower people to join the fight.
